User News / Re: Battlefield 3 - Steam release even more distant

Hates... Steam... does not compute.
He hates Steam and everything Valve has ever done, I believe.  As well as most shooters.

They love money soo much they took Crysis 2 down.
That was Valve's decision I believe, not EA.

Because that's so important. The market is already oversaturated with shooters. One series dying will be a good thing.

Is it really that hard to download from something that isn't your main service? Will Steam get angry at you for cheating on it?

And yes, I know I'm being pissy, but I haven't gotten any sleep and these reasons make no sense to me, damn it.
As Mikethor said, having one download service is simply more convenient than having to manage a half dozen or whatever the case happens to be.

And yes, it would be good if Call of Duty died off as it has a complete stranglehold on the rest of the shooter market.  But that's my opinion.

Might be EA trying to sell their new Origin store. Put a highly anticipated game on it, and it's bound to get some extra use.

Eh. I don't really see the issue, most places you can buy a hard copy, and if you can't, there are other digital retailers.
The reason why it's a problem is because Steam is one of the most massive distribution markets on PC.  Cutting them out of a release like Battlefield 3 is a very good way to ensure that they lose the upcoming battle to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

It's also a good way to piss off a lot of PC gamers who don't want to add yet another digital download service.

All of these are on sale for $2.99

Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
One of the best side-scrolling platformers ever made, Earthworm Jim is filled with quirky humor, beautiful artwork and great level design.  It's a shooter, first and foremost, but it combines those mechanics with a lot of very fun (and challenging) platforming elements.  It's an older game but it's an absolute classic, and for $2.99 it's a steal.

Fallout 1 & 2
This is where Fallout started, folks.  While certainly not as flashy as its modern incarnations (the visual pallete is basically brown, brown and more brown), the actual structure of the game will feel familiar.  You can still travel the landscape, finding other inhabitants and completing quests for them in order to gain Karma and Experience Points.  Combat is turn-based, unlike the modern games, but you can still fight in a variety of ways, ranging from melee to ranged combat.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto
This 3rd person shooter is a wonderfully hilarious romp through a piece of paradise known as "The Island."  Your character is of a race called the "Meccs," and you crash-land onto this planet.  Little do you know, the local inhabitants are fighting against one another, and you're going to get caught right up into it.  Really, this game is worth it for the comedy alone.

MDK 1 & 2
MDK is also a third person shooter, developed by Shiny Entertainment.  The premise is your typical "Save the Earth from invading aliens," but you get to do so with a parachute and a helmet-mounted sniper rifle.  It's great fun and filled with Shiny's typical humor.  MDK 2 is the sequel, obviously, and this one was actually developed by Bioware.  Yes, THAT Bioware.  The sequel introduces two new playable characters and Bioware's trademark writing.

Sacrifice
This is, bar none, one of the best RTS games I have ever played, and also one of the most unique.  The gameplay takes place from a 3rd-person perspective, where you play as your team's wizard (or commander, in RTS terms).  The objective in each match is to wipe out the enemy's base, which you do by sacrificing one of your units at the enemy's altar.  In order to accomplish this, wizards must gather two resources: souls and mana.  Souls are required to summon creatures that fight at your side, while mana is used to both summon creatures and cast spells.  There are 10 levels of spells and 9 levels of creatures, and you can easily gain all 9 levels in a single match.  This results in intense and chaotic battles as more powerful creatures and spells do battle.  Some spells are so powerful that they can quite literally change the environment.  There are five different "Gods" to which your wizard can be faithful to, each with their own spells and creatures.  All of these wildly different "Gods" are insanely well balanced, so no player is at a disadvantage just because they chose the wrong army.  There's both singleplayer and multiplayer available here, and the singleplayer has a remarkably good story and the ability to import your SP wizard into multiplayer.

If there's one game I recommend, it's Sacrifice if for no other reason than for a bunch of us to play it :P

Not in the above screenshots, no.

Modding Discussion / Re: [Mass Effect 2] High Resolution Texture Mod
« on: June 26, 2011, 04:57:59 PM »
Alright folks, here's the complete "Optimized" pack for all non-DLC characters (aka, everyone except Zaeed and Kasumi).  What this does is lower the 4096x4096 (Ultra-High) textures I've released down to 2048x2048.  This results in up to a 60% reduction in start-up time for the game (five minutes instead of 13-15 for me), reduces framerate drops and also reduces in-game loading times.  Zaeed and Kasumi are separate packs, and I've linked them below.

Download Optimized Pack Here.

For Kasumi and Zaeed:
Download Zaeed's Optimized Textures Here
Download Kasumi's Optimized Textures Here

This mod uses Tali's high resolution texmod WITHOUT the "revealed" face.  I will be releasing a very small mod that will allow you to use the revealed face, if you would like to do so.

Glad they're finally doing it. Still find Crysis 2 a huge disappointment.
I think it had its pros and cons.  The graphics and sprawling levels were reduced by a fair margin, but a lot of that was balanced out by significantly better artistic design and a better story.  The core gameplay was also mostly intact, which was nice.

News / Team Fortress 2 is Free. Permanently. Go Play it.
« on: June 24, 2011, 04:23:12 PM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float]Yes, you heard right, Valve has decided to make Team Fortress 2 a completely free game, supported entirely through microtransactions, such as their hats.  It's a surprisingly generous move for a game that's only a little over 3 years old, but they're also making a fortune with their DLC hats and weapons, so I suppose it makes sense.  Anyways, the game is still fantastic so I highly recommend you all give it a shot if you can.  I would like to note that this is for PC only

In addition to this news, Valve has finally released a new "Meet the Team" video, and this time we're dealing with the Medic.  Check out the video after the break.[cutoff]

So a game unbalancing bonus is fair to you?

What if in the pack there was a weapon which effectively made another useless, would that be fair?
No, it would not be fair to those who didn't pre-order, cool stuff outside the game yes, extra weapons the others can never get and were changing the game, no.

I am sooo very glad that fact was resolved as the basic orders are just as valid as the pre-orders in a game with multiplayer.
The pre-order bonus also includes 4 exclusive maps that, to the best of my knowledge, you can't get anywhere else.  I don't see anyone up in arms about that.

DICE is a competent enough developer to prevent one weapon singlehandedly unbalancing the game.

I don't think this really comes as a surprise to anyone.  Battlefield 3 appears to be the first next-gen game (on PC at least), and to expect the PS3 or Xbox 360 version to hold up to that is just asking too much.

That said, I was fairly impressed with how well the PS3 version performed with the demo.

[float=left]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bINUfbLV_0M[/float]Well this was unexpected, though in hindsight it was probably inevitable (and, as such, is awesome).  The 3ds remake of Ocarina of Time is due for release on June 19th, and Nintendo has been quietly yet steadily increasing the marketing campaign.  The latest advertisement features the beautiful Zelda Williams and her father Robin "Epic Beard Man" Williams having a cute little father/daughter moment.  Given Zelda is more or less a household name at this point, it's a great little advertisement that appears to show two generations connecting together.  Not much of the actual game is shown...but the vast majority of people buying it know what they're in for.

For those of you interested in the game, it is pre-order only.  Nintendo is only making enough copies to fill the requested orders, so don't expect to be able to walk into a store and just pick it up.

To the left is the advertisement that will air on TV.  You can find a full 4 minute interview with Robin and Zelda Williams after the bump.[cutoff]

Because Dragon Age 2 is a single player game, not a multiplayer game were the smallest advantage can tip the scale of balance.
Crysis 2's pre-order bonus allowed you to start at Level 5 in multiplayer.  I didn't hear anyone complaining about that.

Quite frankly, a multiplayer game can be unbalanced simply because the other team has unlocked more weapons than you thanks to experience.  The counter to that is to find weapons and tactics that work against them.  The same idea applies here.

News / Re: Battlefield 3 Exclusive Pre-Order Content

And then your screwed out of the stuff that comes with pre-orders. Just because you don't want to buy a game you don't care about at launch.
Pre-orders serve two functions.  First, they are a decent gauge of how interested the public is in the game.  Second, they reward people who pick up the game at launch.

Pre-orders have been going on for YEARS.  Pre-order bonuses, by definition, is usually stuff that you can only get by pre-ordering the game.  Why did we chose Battlefield 3 as the "criminals" here when a excrementload of other games do the same thing?  I didn't see ANYONE bitching about Dragon Age 2 pre-orders having $20 of bonus content and a free limited edition.

No Gamestop here where I live. So, no limited edition pre-order and no extra items.
Then get it off Amazon or something.  The bonus is not a Gamestop-exclusive :P

I thought Tran already explained it?
For me, there's a simple solution.  In a case like that, I pre-order the game anyway (just in case) and if I end up still not caring when the game is released, then I cancel my pre-order and put the money on something else.  It appears that the map pack that comes with the pre-order is going to be released to the general public at one point as-is; it just might cost a few dollars.

The flechette rounds sound an awful lot like they're taking BC 2's magnum ammo (the OP mod that almost everyone used after unlocking it) and making it a preorder bonus. :x

If they wanted to beat Call of Duty they should have done it by offering a superior product and backing it up with free content releases to the game owners. Compared to Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2, Bad Company 2 just received an amazing amount of content. Mostly free multiplayer maps. And one DLC pack which was purely aesthetic.

Meanwhile Activision is regurgitating old map designs, and calling them new content, then asking $15 for the crap. Furthermore, it only serves to divide their community in to 'haves' and 'have nots' that can't coexist on the same servers without someone getting booted off for not having a map or being fed up they aren't seeing the new map they paid for.

Now EA apparently has decided to throw caution to the wind and join the franchise milking crowd of offering special content for whoever has the ability or the desire to purchase this limited edition. And EA apparently DOESN'T WANT US TO BUY IT, since they made it available in one gently-carressing place. And if you can't deal with it, tough damn luck.

See, here's what I don't get though.  These pre-order bonuses do not. cost. you. anything.  You put $5 down on the game at Gamestop and you're guaranteed the Limited edition of the game (which will be the standard $60).  If you end up deciding shortly after release that you simply do not want the game, then go to the same Gamestop, cancel your pre-order and use that money for something else.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I just, flat-out, don't see the problem.
