What are your thoughts on using this PC as a base?
« on: October 05, 2011, 05:23:36 PM »
What do you people think of this PC as a base for my next PC. As far as I know it looks decent enough and is a good price to then get parts for it if needs be, which I know I'll need some parts as I'd like it to play stuff on higher end graphics wise and stuff like that.
So yeah what do you think?

Is it a good base, what parts do you think I'll need along with it, please also note that I'll be on English voltage level, just in case you need to know for the PSU, which I know I'll already need to upgrade if I am gonna get a better graphics card or something.

Good starting point. Maybe more memory, or the video card + PSU combo as you pointed out. If your budget is tight, keep that card, it is a good entry to mid level video card, especially if you get a free copy of DIRT 3 with it as on that ad.

If you're going to get other parts down the line and install them yourself, you might as well start from scratch.

Well I have a planned range of up to £1000.
So if I buy that I could do both maybe, dunno I am not sure on the memory and how it works but if I need more then I'll get it.

If you're going to get other parts down the line and install them yourself, you might as well start from scratch.

Yeah but I'd rather have something to look at to know how everything goes first rather from starting from scratch, plus it'll be more of a bother for me as I am computer illiterate, if I knew what I was doing I would be doing the parts thing first.
I'll probably give myself a better graphics card or something but some people over in Clan Zorah said it would be good enough to play most stuff on higher end anyway.

Was advised to get a better processor though, so I think I might do that.

If it's improvement in games you're concerned about, upgrade the GPU first. That CPU is fine.

The HD 6770. Recommendations would depend on budget.

As I said the target was of having £1000 to spend, or the best part of that.
And with the around 350 gone from that tower then I have quite a bit left but I also have to get screens and a keyboard too.
And a long ethernet cable.

Ooo, you still have to buy a monitor. That complicates things a bit.

There's the 6970:
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/ATI/ATI+6900+Series/Sapphire+ATI+Radeon+HD+6970+2048MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+%5B11187-00-40R%5D+?productId=43098

It's around £290.

Though if you're going to buy a new pre-made tower and then upgrade the video card, you'll be left with the one that came with the computer. Maybe you could sell it to get some money back.

If I knew for certain that the motherboard for that computer could support CrossFire, I'd consider adding in another 6770, it's around £90 on that same site.

Hmmm, well I am gonna get two as I need one for xbox and ps2 in my room too. :P
Plus I'll need the extra screen for photoshop work.
I'll need a keyboard too, but that is easy and cheap to get, I'll just hop on down to Dixons or PC world or something to get that.
I'll obviously either sell the video card or maybe keep it if the upgraded one breaks.
If it can support CrossFire I'll probably add the second 6770.

Do you know where I can find another 6970 if not?
And that card you suggested is discontinued. :(

Two quick things
-Adding another 6770 might give you a bad case of microstuttering.
-The 6970 is a BIG card. Might not fit in that case.

Yeah, that's unfortunately one of the weaknesses of SLI/CrossFire setups...

It's a BIG card? Ooops. Forgot about that.

Ah.
And microstuttering...don't know what that is. :P

And yeah I think two smaller ones would be better than.
Either that or I could find a similar machine that is larger.
I really don't want to have to bother with getting all the parts from a load of different places if building it myself.

Okay so I have this plan as an option but just in case can someone supply a recommendation by the way of parts easily accessible for a residence in England, using English power obviously, with a price range of up to £1000 and has to consider 2 screens and a keyboard.

Screens don't need to me larger than 19/20 inches.
I am not fond of huge screens and I don't have the money or space anyway. :P

2 screens?
One for xbox and photoshop stuff and the other as the main screen.
And maybe to keep the IRC open in busy times when playing EaW, maybe, I dunno.

Minly for the xbox and photoshop stuff as I am getting annoyed with having to switch out for the image to look and then click back onto photoshop when using my stylus as my mouse.

Okay, so I am getting more active on the job searching stuff so I thought I'd plan the PC build sorta thing a bit more so I'm not rushing around too much closer to the time.
So May I formally request some suggestions on a PC which could be self built, with assistance from a person at the time of building, if possible, the price range I am currently thinking of going up to is £1000, but willing to wait a bit longer and save a bit more for some parts if needs be.
The intention is to play games rather prettily, you know the big games that are pretty, Crysis, BF3, that lot, you know?

So if anyone is willing to lend any suggestions they'd be very much appreciated as I have no idea where to begin! :D

First question:  Where can you buy parts from?  If you where in the US newegg would be your one stop shop but you aren't and I don't know what is available over there.  Also I don't know if you have/will have a credit/debit card to purchase online with or if you have to shop locally.

We can help tailor the build to what you can get easily by knowing who you can get parts from.

I have a debit card now that works, I'll have to check where I can but parts from but I assume that a few internet shops are available, but yeah I'll have to check which ones I can actually order from. :D

I don't actually know any sites for PC parts other than Newegg so I'll have to look. :D

I really don't think you can go wrong with this. It has some places you can buy parts from in the U.K. too.

Hmmm, well seeing as I will be on English Currency I think that the excellent slot is a decent place to start for my beginning budget of £1000
But my budget will have to include screens, and keyboard.

Thanks for the image/guide. :)

I'll have a look and see and ask questions afterwards.
One quick one now though, besides obvious size...what is the difference between the cases in the "Excellent" range?
Is it just aesthetics?
Because if so I don't really care what it looks like on the outside or if it displays the innards of my PC, I don't need that tbh...

Potentially better cooling. That shouldn't be a problem unless you go with two video cards though. I've got a mishmash of parts that would fall somewhere between the "Outstanding" and "Great" categories, and the temperatures a more than acceptable in the HAF 912 recommended for "Very Good".

Yup, I'm all the way down there in the "Enthusiast" category. Except I have a GTX 580 instead of two GTX 560 Ti video cards.

It is a very good guide indeed.

Boy, the HAF X is huuge. And fugly, according to a lot of people. But it sure does have a lot of room for working on the components, besides managing all the cabling.
