Nintendo Shares Fall After Wii U Announcement
« on: June 08, 2011, 05:06:26 PM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float]Shares fell to their lowest point in 5 years after the announcement of the new Wii U.  Apparently a system who's controller is practically an entire portable game system itself isn't the most confidence inspiring announcement ever made.  Gamasutra's article says merely that the announcement itself was lacking but I personally feel that most don't expect the console to do well.  The controller seems unwieldy, and the announcement of finally going HD and having better graphics than the current crop of consoles doesn't impress me.  The PS3 and Xbox 360 are 5 and 6 years old at this point, if the new console from Nintendo didn't outdo them in performance I would have been shocked.  All in all, the system seems to be trying to be too many things to too many people.

I'd like to think that most people are past the point of judging how good a system is based on graphics and instead based on the capabilities of the system, and this is something new and interesting that I think should be more important than graphics. And I for one wouldn't be that shocked if the Wii U didn't outdo the 360 and PS3 graphically. They may be old but they still have incredible graphics, because Sony and Microsoft are both electronics companies, and their systems are built as such. Nintendo is a toy company that builds fancy toys, it's never made graphics its main focus and I don't think they're likely to start now.

Finally someone is calling bullexcrement on them.

Unwieldy controller is an understatement.

Reminds me of this piece of junk:

Which is a controller for this:

Toaster

I don't see why the design really matters that much, and there's a lot of games you can play on Nintendo consoles. You have to actually have one of their systems to know that. And the 3 games thing is the same for the other systems for the most part.

PS3: God of War, Killzone, Drake's Fortune

Xbox: Gears of War, Halo, Mass Effect, Battlefield (for some people)

I mean that litterateur their flagship titles are the same three (maybe more) games slightly re-textured.

Their flagship games are Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. They're all fun so I don't see what the problem is. And if you mean all the sequels are a lot like the others in the series, that's because some games can't really change how they work and still really be a game of that series. They've been made to be one way and that's the way the work.

I resisted a joke of "Maybe they should stick to what they do best: making the same game 12 times."  :P

Unwieldy controller is an understatement.

Which is a controller for this:

Don't be dissing on the Jaguar!

... Okay, yeah... That controller was horrid.  But it's the Jaguar man!

On the multiple games discussion.  Mass Effect can't really be thrown in on that, it's a story told through.  I hesitate to put God of War/Gears of war on that as well for the same reason (even if I do dislike the games personally).  The various battlefields/call of duty's are completely guilty of making the same game over and over again just like Mario, but I really feel that the trilogies named don't really belong.

Halo even is completing a story for 1/2/3, the additional they keep bringing on are guilty of the make the same thing over again I think but the core there doesn't count to me.

Also don't get me wrong: There are plenty of good original titles for Nintendo consoles, but Nintendo themselves don't seem to make many of them.  The problem in my eye is that most of their front runners are not designed to be story driven.  They are arcade games because that's where the whole thing started.

But my real problem with this new console is that abomination of a controller.  That's just painful.  A 6inch 200dpi screen is great in a handheld, but who is going to want to use that when they've got a 40" TV in front of them like 90% of their market will?  The tech behind pulling off that screen setup is going to kill their price point also.

I'll concede that point, the only games I can think of that are really telling a story with them are the Zelda games (sometimes) and the Metroid games. I do like that Metroid will also make nice changes to the gameplay with new titles, though. Probably why Metroid is my favorite series for Nintendo consoles.

I predict an "acessory" that will be just a regular gamepad sans that screen. Just like the one the Wii had.

Should be a good kick in the pants for them. Novelty's worn off, so now either they come up with something entirely new or offer something comparable to what Sony and Microsoft will offer.

Wii U will not play any sort of DVD and/or Blu-ray movie.

looking at stock, it is no coincidence the device name is onomatopoeia for the horn that goes off around things that stink in older cartoons.
