OOC: Diaspora: Empires of Sol
« on: September 28, 2014, 05:13:44 PM »
Good day all, here is yet another space-based civilization RP, but somewhat different from the others that have been seen on this site. Rather than spanning the entire galaxy and including countless species, this game will take place only within Sol - our very own star system - and the only available race is humanity. In terms of rules and overall way of working, this game will be very much like Fronter: the Void, for those who are familiar with that one.

Story
Throughout the 21st and early 22nd century, despite the mistrust and tension which caused the Second Cold War, humanity saw herself established in colonies out in cold space, slowly spreading further and further across our solar system, all backed by unions of nations together financing this enormous project. Eventually, these stations, either built in space or on the surface of planets, began being able to feed and run themselves, with Triton Station on Luna being declared the first self-sufficient station in 2089, and with other stations quickly following suite.

However, in 2111, with the end of the Second Cold War and the beginning of World War 3, Earth saw itself ravaged by nuclear war on top of already being flooded with water due to global warming. Earth entered a nuclear winter, and all forms of governments eventually collapsed, its peoples dying out. The colonies out in space were cut off from Earth, no longer having any nation to belong to. Stations that were not already self-sufficient by this time either became abandoned husks or graveyards. Those who were alive knew that this was the end of all they had known. An era had ended, and a new one had begun: an era of diaspora for the entire human race.

Now, at the twilight of the 24th century, the reality of mankind looks very different from how it once did. Colonies and stations have banded together to form nations, bringing about the return of mistrust and war. Although Earth has been reclaimed, it is an irradiated husk of its former self, and even there must the people live in stations in order to survive. Surviving, let alone thriving, on humanity's former cradle is no easier than it is on any other station in the system. In this new world of struggle, greed and war, humanity asks herself: where will we go from here?

What is your answer? Which path will your people take?

Civilizations

Spoiler for Orion Federation=Tobbs:

Orion Federation

Government type: Democracy
Leader(s): President: Xiao Lang
Prime Minister: Yun Ming

Territory: 25 stations spread across the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
Capital: Babylon, Ceres

Population: 37 million
Primary languages: Chinese, English, French, German, Afrikaans

Society: The Orion Federation strives for the old Earthern ideas of democracy, freedom and tolerance. It is very culturally and religiously tolerant, which perfectly supplements its vast range of both, and its democracy functions quite well, even if some corruption can always be expected. But despite all this, the federation abides by the system's eternal law: Conquer or be Conquered. With all its tolerance and liberty, the federation is very militaristic, putting great amounts of resources in training and equipping its army. With the exception of a two-year mandatory service, being part of the military is purely voluntary, and there is no form of conscription used. Fortunately, since the population is aware the federation must fight to survive and thrive, there is never a shortage of volunteers. Several small nations within the asteroid belt have already been conquered by the federation, but its people have been welcomed into Orion society with open arms, and many argue that the Orion conquest was ultimately for the better of everyone, even if many disagree.

Like almost all the rest of humanity, the Orion people are mainly vegetarian, the only animals existing on the stations being pets. This is because although they have the genetic codes needed to clone and breed livestock, they do not have space or resources to waste on such a thing, instead eating only the crops grown on the stations and soy-based protein replacements for meat. Real meat is considered a luxury, and even the soy-based replacements are mainly imported, as food production on Orion stations is almost exclusively vegetarian.

Economy: Being a trade federation located in the rich asteroid belt, the Orion Federation has amassed a great amount of wealth both through trade within itself and with other nations, as well as through mining of metals and other materials. The nation is highly capitalistic, encouraging free trade and backing large corporations. Unfortunately, this has started to create an economical gap between the classes of society. Although this gap is not very great as of now, it is very slowly but constantly widening.

Military: Orion military is made up mostly of well-trained, well-equipped volunteer soldiers serving as marines aboard ships and kept in reserve at stations. Due to lacking any great open areas, there are no vehicles to speak of. Orion soldiers are instead supported by other soldiers placed within large, robotic exoskeletons, turning them into a sort of super heavy infantry while remaining small enough to walk through the standard hallways and rooms of stations and ships.
Defence: Stations belonging to the Orion Federation are typically defended first and foremost by the Orion fleets. In the event of a boarding, the stations have marines placed in reserve, which can be quickly mobilized in order to repel an invasion. The stations' police force is also trained to act as a kind of militia should the need arise, and there are also automated turrets scattered throughout the stations to aid the marines and defend civilians.

Back Story (Optional): The Orion Federation started out with three different colonization operations within the asteroid belt - one from the EU, one from China, and one from the South African Union. A few years following the destruction of said nations on Earth, these three conglomerates of stations, all sharing ambitions and ideals (China having thrown off the shackles of Communism in 2045), agreed to join together and form the Belt Federation, later renamed the Orion Federation. The three stars on the federation's flag symbolize the dwarf planets Ceres, Vesta and Pallas, which were what made up Orion territory at its original formation.

Infantry Description:
Spoiler for AFO:

The Armed Forces of Orion are the federation's marine corps and main military body. They are a well-trained and well-equipped volunteer army equipped with high-powered ballistic automatic rifles and armoured suits of magnesium alloy-reinforced ceramic plating and underlying carbon nanotubes. Their armours are also equipped with electrical neural links along the spine, allowing the soldier perfect synchronization when connected with a Zeichner exoskeleton.
Spoiler for Jaeger:

The Zeichner-033 Jaeger Combat Exoskeleton is a heavy robotic external skeleton with a height of about 2 metres, serving as the heavy hitter and support unit of the Orion armies. It is the latest model of the Orion-exclusive Zeichner series, and is one of the things which have made the federation the current leader in military power in the system. Completely immune to small-arms fire, these machines are typically equipped with heavy machine guns, automatic shotguns or grenade launchers. Due to the neural receptors both within the exoskeleton and along the spine of Orion soldiers, the soldier establishes a neural link with the suit upon equipment, both denying use of the suit to those who do not have Orion armours, and making use of the suit so easy that any soldier of standard military training can use it without difficulty.
Spoiler for OPKF:

The Orion Peace-Keeping Force are the police forces of the federation. There are 4 different sections of OPKF, dealing with different matters of national security. Counting left to right:
The Station Security Force (SSF) are your typical police officers. They deal with theft, drugs, murder, and everything in between. They are equipped with handguns and stun batons.
The Station Guard (SG) are security guards of government-owned facilities and areas. They carry a handgun and a stun baton, and slightly more armour than the SSF.
The Orion Special Security Dispatch (OSSD) are what it says - the special forces of the police force. They deal with situations that require more force and offer more danger than the SSF are trained to deal with. They are equipped with a sub-machine gun, a handgun and a stun baton.
The Terror Response Group (TRG) are the counter-terrorist force of the Orion Federation. They deal with all kinds of operations dealing with domestic terrorism. They have a wide range of weapons available to them depending on the situation at hand, but their standard-issue equipment is an assault rifle, a handgun, and a combat knife.

Naval Description: To be added later on.
Spoiler for New Commonwealth:
Banner:
Civilization Name: New Commonwealth

Government type: Constitutional Monarchy
Leader(s): Queen Elizabeth IV
Prime Minister Alexander Reid

Territory: 25 Stations from Luna to Mars. 5 on Luna, 6 on Mars, 2 on Phobos, 2 on Deimos, 1 on Earth and 8 amongst the Asteroid Belt
Capital: Port Victoria, Luna

Population: 32 million
Primary languages: English, French

Society: The New Commonwealth strives for the past glories of Earth, drawing inspiration from the British, French and Dutch colonial empires of old. Though generally a tolerant society, there is a well-established patriarchal class system, though it is common for someone to jump classes if they have the means. Society in the New Commonwealth also accepts and practices indentured servitude, which is usually voluntarily undertaken to repay debts to individuals or society as a whole. The people of the New Commonwealth have an imperialistic attitude towards the rest of the human diaspora, believing that humanity rightfully belongs under one banner, the banner of the New Commonwealth. They believe that to avoid the disaster of the Third World War that destroyed human civilization on Earth, humanity must be a united front, and so the New Commonwealth works towards the goal of human unification, whatever the cost; be it through diplomacy or conquest if necessary. To that end, two nations have been annexed by the New Commonwealth, with a third becoming a protectorate. The greatest obstacle to the New Commonwealth's goal however is the Orion Federation, the current top military power and natural rival to the New Commonwealth.

The New Commonwealth by necessity follows a mainly vegetarian diet, though they've managed to create near realistic protein alternatives to meat. Real meat remains a delicacy, almost exclusively enjoyed by the upper-class of New Commonwealth society. However the high quality soy protein meat alternatives are said to be almost indistinguishable from the real deal, and is highly sought after outside the New Commonwealth.

Like the Orion Federation, the New Commonwealth puts much emphasis on military prowess, ensuring that it's members are well-trained and well-equipped. Every civilian does their National Service, either in the military or an essential occupation, two years in the military or three years under an essential occupation.

Economy: The New Commonwealth is a free market capitalist state and a major player in the system's economy. Corporations from the New Commonwealth, like Meyer-Westland and Belltower Associates, are well-known brands alongside corporations from the Orion Federation. Alongside asteroid and Martian mining operations, the New Commonwealth is also a heavy investor in major industries system-wide, ranging from agricultural production to starship manufacturing and research into new scientific fields. New Commonwealth banks are also some of the largest and robust in the system, being located in every major station and nation, making the New Commonwealth one of the financial hubs of the system.

Military: The New Commonwealth Naval Service is the armed forces of the New Commonwealth, being divided between the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines. The Royal Marines are smaller in number than most militaries, but they make up for it with some of the most rigorous and extensive training in the system. All Royal Marines go through 36 weeks of infantry training, before moving on to more specialized training in their particular fields, and are divided into ship defence, station garrison or rapid reaction/expeditionary groups. The NCNS's special forces, the Special Boat Service, are drawn from the ranks of the Royal Marines. The Royal Navy is a mixed carrier and hunter-killer navy, focusing on carrier operations and space denial, having fewer heavy cruisers and dreadnoughts than other nations. The Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm also acts as the Commonwealth's air defence and air projection force.

Defence: Defence of the New Commonwealth is mainly provided by the Royal Navy, with Royal Marine garrison's defending the stations. Specialized Royal Marine rapid reaction brigades are also stationed strategically throughout the New Commonwealth, and can respond to any attack in New Commonwealth territory within 48hrs or less, and are often grouped with a naval battle group dedicated to the rapid reaction forces. Docks within the New Commonwealth are also mined, to hamper boarding forces, or deny control of the docks to the enemy if necessary. Automated turrets and semi-automated robotic sentries also provide defence and aid to Royal Marine garrison's within the stations. The Royal Marines also make limited use of vehicles, mainly IFV's, infantry mobility vehicles, armoured reconnaissance vehicles and light mechanized assault suits.

Back Story (Optional): The New Commonwealth started out as a joint Anglo-American colonization project of the moon and mars, as well as a few mining stations in the Asteroid Belt. Following the outbreak of the Third World War and subsequent nuclear exchange on Earth, the stations on Luna and Mars found themselves isolated after losing contact with Earth. For a few years the stations struggled to adapt to the new post-war reality, keeping in regular contact with each other and forming separate provisional governments of their Earth sponsors. Ten years later however the Lunar and Martian stations accepted the reality of their situation, and realizing there would be no one left on Earth to take authority, formally dissolved the states of the United Commonwealth and United States. For years afterword the Lunar and Martian stations carried on as independent states, slowly rebuilding civilization on the two colonies. Soon they slowly regained contact with other human stations in the solar system, and a new social political reality dawned on them. With other stations banding together to form new nations, the stations on Mars and Luna began to grow weary. For the longest time they were each other's only contact, and not too long ago regular travel and immigration had started between the two colonies, followed by trade and economic links. With powerful conglomerates rising from the ashes, the two colonial governments formally agreed to a merger of their two states, forming the New Commonwealth. A Constitutional Monarchy with a strong parliament, based on the Westminster model was decided upon, with the closest surviving relative of King George VIII being crowned. Believing this new union had a manifest destiny, the New Commonwealth began an arms buildup to defend against and make war with the new colonial nations rising up. The first thing the New Commonwealth did was reclaim some of the asteroid stations in the Asteroid Belt, some abandoned but others held by rogue settlers. After re-inhabiting or conquering the former US and UC stations, the New Commonwealth began to trade and invest in mining firms, slowly expanding to invest and control other major economic and industrial spheres.

Two wars broke out with neighbouring station-states, ending with the conquest and annexation of the enemy stations. Eventually a third station-state petitioned for and received protectorate status from the New Commonwealth, with a Royal Marine battalion being garrisoned alongside the station's security forces. Now the New Commonwealth has grown to be a wealthy and powerful colonial power, and is seeking to expand even further, until they accomplish their goal of uniting humanity under their banner.

Infantry Description:
Spoiler for Royal Marines:

The Royal Marines are the marine infantry of the New Commonwealth. They are a highly-trained and well-equipped force, making use of state-of-the-art equipment, bullpup rifles, vacuum-rated titanium-ceramic alloy, carbon-tube reinforced armour with a liquid polyethylene glycol and nano-silica layer padded inside, along with a low-profile exoskeleton fitted underneath the BDU, based on the US's WarriorWeb system.

Spoiler for Special Boat Service:

The SBS are the special forces of the New Commonwealth. They are a highly-trained, well-equipped and highly secretive force. Every mission they undertake is classified and is never revealed to the public or even other members of the military. Their actions are only known and controlled by the Cabinet, Queen and the Director of Special Operations. They are fitted with state-of-the-art and experimental gear, including the latest electronic camouflage and nano-embedded armour.

Diplomacy
This part is dedicated to keeping track of the diplomatic relations of each nation of the human diaspora controlled by a human player. It can be summarized by seven different tabs:

Defensive Allies
Nations bound together with this particular nation under a pact of mutual defence. These allies can be not called upon in a war of aggression.

Military Allies
Allies to this civilization which can be mutually called upon in wars of aggression from either side. Military allies can be very valuable in terms of expansion, but is also a much bigger gamble, as the risk of being pulled into a war is much greater.

Enemies
Nations currently at a state of war with this civilization.

Rivals
Nations with conflicting ideologies or claims towards this civilization, or nations considered a threat towards this civilization's independence and way of life. Rivals are more liable to clash in wars.

Trade partners
Nations that this civilization have an agreement with to open up their borders for trade.

Satellite states
Nations who have sweared fealty to this civilization. Satellite states are fairly autonomous, but pay an annual homage to their overlord state, and are obliged to join them in times of war.

Treaties
Diplomatic modifiers currently active between this civilization and another, such as a peace treaty or a non-aggression pact, as well as the amount of time remaining on these treaties if they are bound by a specified time frame.

These tabs are all left blank in the beginning of the game, but can be quickly filled through interactions within the game. A nation can declare another its rival immediately after the game begins, but it is always left blank in the beginning.

Naval Description: TBA

You do pretty much the same thing every time, you know. Ever considered making something else than space Neo-Britain? :P Also, you have stations in the asteroid belt? Great way to make an enemy of the OF. They want that area for themselves.

Also, I had no idea of what most your soldiers' equipment was. I think I'm going to have to change my troops a bit, or you are going to get the advantage just by knowing more than I do.

By the way, everyone, I forgot to mention - everyone has the exact same technologies in the beginning, so no one is any more advanced than anyone else. Balancing reasons. You wanna get ahead, you're gonna have to research.

Keep calm and move along.

Added in the New Commonwealth. Though, just a detail - if Port Victoria is located on an asteroid or planet, I'd like to include which in your sheet. So would you mind telling me where it is located?

Keep calm and move along.

That's because I like space Neo-Britain. :P And the Asteroid Belt is huge, I doubt I'm even neighbours with the OF. :P

Molecularly bonded metals that are low-weight and high-strength. The polyethylene glycol with nano-silica is a form of liquid armour, it turns into a solid under high-pressure, like a bullet or shrapnel impact. It's a high-end alternative to Kevlar. Look up WarriorWeb to get a better idea of what it is.

Well yeah, but they want all of it :P

I might just get some of that. The only alternative I knew before for sci-fi armour was ceramic plating, but I'm guessing that's really heavy in comparison.

My Jaegers might make up for that, but still...
Port Victoria is on Luna.
Oki-doke. Half expected you to put it on Earth.

By all means. Ceramic plating is a lightweight metal, just like titanium, so really weight-wise it's not much of a difference.

Don't worry, as GM you still have the advantage of a larger military, larger economy and your Jaegers. But my Royal Marines are better trained, and my navy is built to counter large navies like yours. :P

Right, I'm going to put my capital on the radioactive husk of a wasteland that is Earth...

Why would you assume that your troops are better trained and how my navy looks? Orion troops are pretty damn well-trained and I haven't said a word about my navy :P
Right, I'm going to put my capital on the radioactive husk of a wasteland that is Earth...
As I said, it's about as easy surviving there as anywhere else. Hell, it's still the only place in the system with a natural atmosphere.

Never said your troops weren't well-trained Tobbs, but as GM you already have the advantage in numbers and equipment, gotta balance it out just a bit. As for your navy, true I did make an assumption, based on your previous navies. :P

True, I do have a bit more numbers and my Jaegers are pretty badass. As for the navy, I'm not yet sure how I want it to look. But if you can counter a navy based on numbers, I guess I'll come up with something else, then :P

Admin of the site is away and you need approval for to enter PBP Gamemaster group, which is required to post a topic in PBP games.

I've been awaiting approval for a few months now.

I'll try again to get into contact with Tran again. Though if you want you can always have Me or Necross make the OP in the Game board

Just make sure you're in the queue for PbP Gamemaster so when Tran gets around to it he can quickly approve you.

I'm pretty sure I already have GM membership. I've been GM before of a game that died almost immediately.

I've moved the game to Iwaku to see if I can get it started there. If it does kick of and you still want part in it, click this link.

Maybe people will become interested later on. In fact, I have a friend who said she'll ask around her Iwaku contacts to see if anyone would be interested in it, and she'll take a look at it herself, too, both there and here. So even if none of the people she'll ask respond, at least we might get one more...

I honestly would join but I am already trying to run Frontier.

And since you seem to be dependent on my rules, I will need to finish making the rules.

I think you could at least try having a go at this as well. I will be trying to run this while at the same time playing Frontier, so I think you should be able to do something similar.

As for the rules, I'm not worried. We can work them out.

Keep calm and move along.

Maybe I will then. depending on limitations I have in Bio-engineering. Organic weapons and armor, chemical warfare and such. Including genetic manipulation and improvement.

If I am able to accomplish these things, count me in. I'll make a small and very very specialist Organization (Key word Organization, not nation)
