Playstation Store to be Restored Next Week
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:51:39 PM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float]After more than a month and a half of downtime, Sony has officially announced the return of the Playstation Store.

After being hacked by an unknown hacker group, alleged to be Anonymous, the Playstation network was severely compromised, with reports that tens of thousands of users' personal credit card information was stolen.  Sony eventually decided to shut down the Playstation Network in its entirety, taking nearly a month to restore the online service.  Since then, users have been eagerly awaiting the return of the Playstation Store, which will once again allow DLC, game demos and other content to be downloaded once more.  Sony will also be releasing a "Welcome Back" package in the coming weeks, including 1-2 months of Playstation Plus for all users and a choice of two free downloadable titles, including Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD and Dead Nation.

As someone who recently purchased a PS3 and have yet to use it online, I'm very much looking forward to the return of the Playstation Store so I can download PSOne Classics and get my Crash Team Racing on.

Finally. I'll be able to get L.A.Noire DLCs plus the free games.

PSN finally back up?
Good.

I bet the games that're free will be the ones no-one wanted to play anyway. :D

Also what's Linux and why was every PS3 user all up in arms about it?

Linux is an operating system, like windows or mac.  You used to be able to install linux onto a PS3 using the "other os" feature.  Then sony removed that option in a firmware patch.  I have yet to patch my system so I can still use it.  But if I want the freebies then I have to patch.

The reason PS3 users were/are pissed about it is Sony disabled it because some users in their spare time just to see if it could be done used it as an avenue to examine and break the security systems in place on the PS3.  Now that they removed the option people who actually wanted linux on their ps3 to use as linux have joined the fight and the PS3 security system has been completely torn apart.

Note for companies everywhere: There are tens if not hundreds of thousands of people with the time and the know how to break your security systems.  Pissing them off by taking away something they like will only give them a reason to actually do it.

Yeah but having the option to have that on their system also seems stupid as the means to break their system is there.
And I remember someone was doing something with it before it was taken, I think it was Geohot.
Anyway like I said having it there from the beginning seems kinda stupid to me.
But I'm not a tech head so I wouldn't know anything beyond that.

Except for inFamous and LittleBigPlanet, both of which are widely heralded as two of the best games on the PS3 :P

Too bad I already own Infamous. Dang. Will have to settle for LittleBigPlanet and Wipeout HD I think.

See this is the mistake the companies make.

Linux didn't allow anyone to break their security any faster or better.  Infact if you look at it despite the PS3's security being demonstratively weaker than the Xbox or Wii the PS3 went the longest without any breaks.  Because people had no reason to break it.

People broke the xbox to install linux on it.  They didn't have to do that to install linux on the PS3 so no one did.  Then they cut off linux support on the PS3 and people broke it almost immediately so they could run linux on it.  Before that point the only people working on breaking it where people trying to break it to see if they could.  After that the larger "break it so I can do this thing I want" crowd joined in.

More than that, I didn't pay for a system that played games and movies.  I paid for a system that played games and movies and ran linux because that's what they advertised it as.  Then after my purchase they removed the ability to run linux.

Why do you want to run it anyway?
What's so special about it?
What's so good about running Linux on PS3, Xbox or Wii?
Why bother with it?

Also when does the fact that breaking the machine to run this Operating System not become bad as it is going against the consoles warranty and against the companies copyright.
I mean for PS3 you're basically only playing for the use of the console, not the console itself, or at least that's what I had heard. :P

You've clearly never played LittleBigPlanet then.  My friend and I had a blast trying to screw each other over while solving the platforming puzzles.

I won't get into linux vs win/mac here, but if there is really an interest in the whys/hows I'll do a Q&A on it.  I'm not a huge linux guy but I know enough to answer most questions or point people in the right direction.

Running linux on PS3 is one of the only ways someone without tons of money available can get access to the cell processor.  It's an incredibly powerful and very different computing environment and people like to experiment.  On top of that a lot of the linux community is very much a hobby/experimenter community.  They do things to find out if it can be done, or if they can figure out how to do it.  Asking why a linux guy wants to install it on something is often like asking why your neighbours Jeep is always in 17 different pieces.  It's just what they do.

I wasn't looking to start any massive debate over them I just wanted to know why there was the huge demand for them.
Now I still don't fully understand at this moment in time but I thank you for the answer.

Also in regards to what I was saying was if the people installing linux by breaking the Xbox, and now the PS3, is that not illegal?
Is their hobby truly worth it?

In some places it's perfectly legal, in most places it's only illegal if done for an illegal purpose, in the US it's only illegal because of the DMCA (may not be applicable in this instance).  AKA the stupidest law ever made.  The DMCA essentially says "It's illegal to try to break any security no matter how weak it is."

It's like storing your jewellery in a box with a sign on it that says "pls don't take this" keeping the box in the worst part of town and then throwing me in jail when I wander over and go "That isn't going to stop anyone.  See?" and lifting the lid.

Hacking your xbox to run linux isn't encouraged but calling it illegal is stretching things.  Now if you go and start selling a "hack your xbox" kit... That may be illegal.

I thought hacking into the software of it was illegal as you're going against some form of copyright protection or hardware protection.
And I agree with the DMCA in this case, they shouldn't be hacking in the first place no matter how strong or weak the security is.
And People doing the hacking on PS3 like Geohot were selling custom Firmware and were making a profit on it, so if removing the means for people to do that is necessary in my opinion.

I'm sorry, but the "people shouldn't be hacking" argument is simply ignorant.  There is a massive difference between hacking around with something and maliciously breaking into something.

One of them is taking a safe and fiddling with it to see if it has any weak points.  The other is exploiting the weak points to get to the contents.

I have no issue with someone who buys a safe, locks it, then tries to pick it.  Especially not when those very people have a tendency to call up the maker of the safe afterwards and say "I broke your safe.  If you do this I won't be able to next time."  There is a reason that serious security companies offer large rewards to people who can successfully break it.  Sometimes these rewards are in the $10,000-100,000 range.  It's because $100,000 is a small price to pay to find out what type of attack is successful against it.

The DMCA only exists because of idiots in the RIAA and MPAA and their inability to understand how security works.  Their entire models of encryption are inherently broken and when people pointed it out that ran crying to the government saying "Make it illegal for people to tell us how we gently-carressed up!"

I can see that but when it's illegal to go hacking in the first place than I can't condone it as there would be no risks if people weren't doing it.
I don't see why people would want to go and hack into things anyway, can't people ever be happy with what they have?

Firstly someone will always be doing it.  Someone with malicious intent.  Wouldn't you prefer there where some people who weren't planning on stealing things and told people how to fix it too?  This is the same thing as guns.  If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.  People with intent to cause harm don't care if their method is illegal and they won't let it stop them.

And these people who aren't just content to leave things alone, who insist on hacking things and fiddling, and messing about?  You owe them more than a little.  This website is on SMF, open source software.  Running on an apache webserver.  Open source software.  Connected to a MySQL database.  Open source software.  All on a linux box.  Open source software.  All this in a VPS system.  Probably also open source software given the nature of our host.

All these things are created by people who weren't happy with what they had.  They wanted more and they put their time and effort into making it more.  Then they gave it away for free.  These are the same people who muck about in the PS3 and XBox and Wii hacking them.  It's the same approach that gave us light bulbs and running water.  I don't understand people who can be happy inside a little box of what they know and what they have.  How can you not want more?  How can you not try to expand your horizons?

I can see that but when it's illegal to go hacking in the first place than I can't condone it as there would be no risks if people weren't doing it.
I don't see why people would want to go and hack into things anyway, can't people ever be happy with what they have?
The risk is there even if people don't poke at it. It just doesn't materialize. I'm sorry, but security through obscurity is THE WORST kind of security to have.

What you said is akin of asking humanity not to invent anything. "Why should people invent stuff and not be happy with what they have?"
"A toaster is just a death ray with a smaller power supply!"
