Frontier: The Void
Year: 2582 ; 120 Earth Years Prior to current year

At a random point in third Quadrant a massive rip in Quantum foam opened a massive spiraling menagerie of light and energy, and out tumbled a massive hulk of metal and rock. The huge object was the size of a small moon, and seemed to be made of the clumped and fused hulls of massive star ships and asteroids that had joined with it. It burned, and spurted as if the hulk had been shot at and heavily damaged, in fact it seemed that the Hulk had been blow in half, and this was only a singular half of a larger clump.

The rip slowly sealed itself, as the laws of reality yet again came into play, leaving a strange foreign object of matter, wholly not from this reality or universe, tumbling through space the burning wreck of foreign matter, most likely housed some unfortunate dwellers. The objects venture in this new reality did not last very long as it seemed to have come out in from of the path of a much larger celestial body, a massive comet that was at least twice its size.

The passing of 5 hours concluded that the two object would meet, and so they did, as the comet crashed into the hulk, both were destroyed in a fantastic display of ice, rock and metal, that glinted the distant star light, appearing as a bright white fire work of cold ice and metal. All occurred without a sound, not the slightest, and what occurred here would probably never be known, a silent event in a soundless void.

One piece however was on a direct course with a nearby planet, that one piece housed something that would change the course of the planet it hit, the course of life on it, and possibly of life in the galaxy.

--------------------------
20 Years later
--------------------------

Above a lush verdant world, a single piece of the outer hulk descended towards the surface. Many of its brethren had formed an icy ring around the planet, but it was destined to make impact with the world.

Down below the world had a vast hyperactive ecosystem, everything on the planet was potentially harmful, from the most unassuming plants, to massive predators and environmental hazards. The piece of our traveler made impact with the atmosphere as it began to shed its rocky outer layers and revealed a large metallic object of some sort, headed straight for ground, it looked like it had been constructed, and its rounded shape looked like it was made for impacts, but whatever systems were meant to correct it, had failed long ago as it made impact in a thick jungle, destroying a quarter mile of verdant foliage.

The metal vessel was blown asunder and it released a virulent cloud of green spores that landed in the upturned soil of the impact site, new life would start here.

-------------------------
100 years later, the Earth Year 2702
-------------------------

On the outer edge of the galaxy, a new phenomenon was occurring unlike the torrential rip that had happened a century prior, this one was control and nearly unnoticeable. A slit in the fabric of space and time opened and a fleet of dark crescent shaped ships of various sizes poured through. Sleek and dark the blended in well with the void, the only thing betraying their presence was when they happened to pass in front of the distant star light.

There were several large ships in the fleet that dwarfed the smaller ones near them. Within the central most one, in a central chamber sat a large robed figure holding a staff much like a Scythe, with a Scythe blade pointing in each direction. He had a flowing green robe and hood that hid his face in shadow except for two glowing emerald eyes.

His metallic, sharp fingers rapped against the ebony stone throne he sat on, he eventually tapped in the air and a misty interface made out of a greenish fog appear, strange alien runes and symbols on it, that defied understanding, he tapped on a few of them and then the interface disappeared.

A cold voice began to speak, it sounded artificial, a dark voice with a hint of synthetic emanation. It spoke in a completely alien language, one that used sounds that did not seem to be within the capacity of Human vocal manipulation.

For the sake of knowledge though, this was said,"Recon fleet, We have.....arrived. This is the calculated position of our targets arrival, it must have arrived within this galaxy."

The metal being continued,"I want all scout ships to begin plotting a galactic map, scan systems with orbiting bodies, and only chart starts without them. I expect this to be done quickly, we must check and see how much of a time difference there has been since our arrival. That is all, the rest, proceed to find a suitable planet for a tomb base." W

With that the fleet disperse, disappearing as quickly as they had arrived, with modes of transport beyond the capacity of understanding for lesser beings. The galaxy now had silent watchers, observers....from beyond.
-Year 1205 of the Vis Calendar, Planet of Visei-

The flying city, Aura, was the capital city of the Vis Dominion; a royal city in which only the privileged could enter. Yet, despite this, the city had massive spires that ran upwards and downwards through the clouds; millions of people residing within them working towards the advancement of the Dominion. Ring sections of the city turned at different intervals, allowing for maximum transportation productivity. Yet today was an especially auspicious day, in which those millions of residents came out to the streets in celebration; it was the 1205th anniversary of the birth of the Vis, the celebration of their creation by their extinct creators the Aedir.

In the middle of the city, looking over the bright city whose streets and walls shone with beautiful energy displays (the very picture of opulence in Vis society) was the tallest tower, Xiphialis: The Palace of the Xiphial, the ruler of Vis society birthed by their collective unconscious desires. Said ruler was currently standing on the palace's balcony, overlooking the festivities as he held what looked like a battery in his hands. He was very tall, standing even taller than his Vis subjects, and his unique emerald crystal shone light on the rest of his magnificent regal form.

At his side was his aide and bodyguard, Zai, a man who had served the Xiphial for two generations. The current 40th Xiphial, Ziren, had only faint memories of the man; psychological footprints of the previous incarnation of the Xiphial. But in his five years with the man, a companionship had been created that surpassed that of mere friendship.

"Sire, I bring you news regarding the efforts of the Savants in unravelling the alien technology of the crashed ships." Zai spoke, his energy body vibrating at the exact frequency to create the noises he 'spoke', "Their language is still beyond us, but we have achieved rudimentary synchronisation with their systems and are attempting to decode their programming language. Of course, this will still require us to decrypt the systems to gain any useful technology; a process that will take quite a while to complete."

Ziren turned towards his companion, interest showing in his features, "Interesting, tell them that we will redirect Savants from code breaking sectors to aid them. Our ultimate goal is not far off, it seems." He replied, looking towards the skies

"Sire, if I may..." Zai spoke with uncertainty, "Certainly, the aliens did come here with technology that allowed them to go faster than the Aur Limit; but we may have to wait years, if not decades, for us to utilise such a discovery even with the aid of our invader's technology."

The Xiphial frowned, "We do not have decades, Zai. Our expansion into the Aur System has been slow and has only served to delay the inevitable; we cannot stay in this system for much longer without our population suffering from the consequences." He spoke, "Fusion has powered us well over the years, but our resources are growing thin and soon we will be unable to sustain our growth."

"How fast do you wish for this development to be completed, then?" Zai asked, seeing the fire of ambition in his lord's eyes

Ziren's expression turned serious, turning towards the festivities down in the city and seeing his people enjoy the fruits of their labor. He could not allow them to make sacrifices in the name of stalled progress.

"Within the year, no later."
Hoa; two months before unification.

Colonel Res Tona, commander of the first Foreign occupation Regiment was the first intelligent organic being to lay eyes on the radioactive wasteland that was once the great city of Yama. Before the Unification war over twenty million Kaveni called the Yama, the greatest and oldest city on the planet their home.
As more of his soldiers made it to the top of hill he was standing on he felt the need to say something, if only assure them that they were fighting for the right side. He slowly turned around to see that everyone, all 5000 soldiers under his command were watching over this black field, not even the slightest indication of life or habitation remained.
After almost two whole minutes of silence Colonel Tona finally moved, he took a few more steps forward  and took the banner of the Kaveni Empire from his back.

“By degree of our Emperor, Balu Tau. Our enemies will burn before our feet, their homes shall be reduced to ash and our people will be united.”

He said as he planted the banner into the burned ground.

Hoa; 212 years after unification (present time).

Res Tona watched out of the window of his room, now that he was old and in an retirement home he would often get lost in his memories of the unification war.
200 years ago he wouldn’t have imagined himself being alone in a retirement home almost 300 meters above the ground. after his first battle he never even dared imagine himself surviving the unification war. But he did survive, and he was honourably discharged almost 30 years after the war at the rank of Major General.
Because of that, and the dozens of other jobs Res had after the war he could now afford to live in one of the best retirement homes on Hoa.

He was content to sit back and enjoy his well-earned peace while the younger generations of his race cast their eyes upwards towards to sky, and the Void beyond.

-15th Day of Harvest, Year 612 of the Fifth Era-
-Planet Qart Hadasht-

The whole planet was teeming with activity, more so than usual. The planet's people, the Pheledioms, were running about in their cities, towns and villages, all working on a tight schedule. Almost half of the Days of Harvest had already passed, and the Festival of Harvest was quickly approaching. It was in the minds of all, with anticipation, excitement and stress at the same time. It was the greatest festival there was to the Pheledioms, both those of the Zahati and those of her client states. It was when everyone celebrated the end of the harvest, and food was aplenty, which had turned into a very important moment on a world as arid as Qart Hadasht. The festival was where the people feasted for five days and five nights in the beginning of the Days of Plenty, before they had to prepare for the annual dry season.

In the great capital city of Ba'al Hammon, the activity was particularly high, as all was being prepared. In the great Grand Temple, its magnificent form standing proudly among the countless buildings of the city, Ishkar Mahatu XIV stood within his throne room. He was clad in a crimson red robe with golden accents, and with a dark purple cape draped around his chest and left shoulder. His fingers all had a beautiful golden ring, each adorned with a shining gem. His long, braided hair, which was still black despite his old age, was also adorned with golden rings, each braid having between two and four rings, and the six spikes on his lower jaw also had golden rings on them. On his arms were four golden bracelets, one on each lower arm and one on each upper arm.

The old man stood on the beautiful white stone floor of the throne room, looking out through the gaps between the great stone pillars where one went out to the great balcony. He looked out on the great city, and the lush, grassy plains beyond. He was truly a proud man. He was proud of serving God as his Ishkar, proud to serve his people as their ruler, proud of the great city his ancestors had built, and proud of his people for their determination to this great tradition.

Mahatu heard the great door to his throne room open, and someone walked into the great room before once again closing the door. The Ishkar turned around, and between the two guards who stood by the door, was a young man. He was dressed in the traditional white robe of the lower ranks of the Temple. He made a deep, humble bow as he noticed the Ishkar saw him. The old man raised a brow plate. Someone of this young man's rank would have no business in the throne room other than to deliver a message. "What news do you bring?"asked the Ishkar, his dark voice echoing in the large room, the tone filled with age, but also authority.

The young man made another bow, before speaking. "Your holiness, there has been a rebellion in Ekshetra. A group of heretics have risen up and demands to have their religious beliefs accepted by the Temple."he spoke, his tone making it clear that he himself found the idea ridiculous.

Mahatu simply scoffed as he turned away and looked back over the city. "Ridiculous."he said, tying his hands behind his back. "My answer is simple: let them be until the end of the Festival of Harvest, then crush them, and bring their heads back to Ba'al Hammon. No mercy for heretic scum."

The young man made another bow. "Yes, your holiness."he said, then left the room.

-2502 A.D, fifteen years after the Third World War, five years after the European Unification Crisis
-The Hague, Netherlands, European Union, Earth

The atmosphere in The Hague was tense, not with hostility, though there was indeed a lingering animosity, but with a nervous excitement. If all went well, then this day would mark the most historic turning point in human history, since the end of World War III fifteen years prior. It had taken a decade of intense diplomatic talks, almost derailed by the destruction of Geneva, but in the end it finally looked like the delegates would hammer out the final details. Today the delegates from the United States, Russia, China, the EU and the United Commonwealth were working out the final details of the Treaty of The Hague, the peace agreement reached by the opposing powers that ended the Third World War. But there was a special clause to be added, and it would be revealed today.

Eight hours later, Colonel Andrew Sharpe (Ret.) watched the TV set with his family with intense interest, as the newscaster announced that the major world powers had finally signed the final treaty, that they said would make history.

"...and we now go live to the signing of the Treaty of The Hague, where we are told the leaders of the five signatory powers have an announcement to make".

On the live footage, the President of the United States, the President of the EU, the Queen of the Commonwealth, President of Russia and the President of China stepped onto the platform, with the US President starting:

"Today marks a historic occasion, not just for those who fought in the last, and we hope final World War, but for all nations of the world. Fifteen years ago the world stood on the brink of destruction, our sons and daughters had fought and died on faraway battlefields for two years, and the nuclear arsenals of the entire Earth seemed ready to be unleashed upon us all."

The Queen then began "But on this day, fifteen years ago, the world waked up to what was about to happen, and began the long process towards ending the greatest and most terrible conflict in human history to date. After so many had perished in the terrible fighting, the people of the Earth finally had cause to hope."

The President of Russia then continued "We had realized that through our differences and fighting, we were about to erase our centuries of progress we had made as a species. We had colonized the Moon and Mars, we had begun to mine asteroids, and we were poised to go even further."

The President of China said "All of the great advances of the past three hundred years, were not the works of just one nation. Without the combined resources and efforts of Russia and China, we could not have established the first Lunar mining operations. Without the EU or the Commonwealth, the US could not have established the first Martian colony. We had all worked together to achieve these great thing's, and we did not realize it."

The President of the EU then said "But we did realize the terrible destruction we could have unleashed, from the examples of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the nuclear terrorist attacks that destroyed San Diego, and once again to Geneva five years ago. We vowed never to allow this to happen again, and for the past fifteen years we have working towards this goal. This treaty is not just the final touches to the end of a terrible war, but the beginning of a new era for the peoples of Earth. Today, we are proud to announce the formation of the Coalition States of Earth, a supranational union of our great nations, that will be the engine to power global innovation, bring peace to our world, and lead humanity to the stars."

The five leaders stepped back to a roaring applause. Andrew Sharpe and his family stared in shock at their TV, not even listening to some of the details of this new union being rattled off. It was, indeed, quite a day.

-2702 A.D, 200th Anniversary of the formation of the Coalition States of Earth
-The Hague, Netherlands, European Union, Earth

Fireworks were lighting up the sky of the whole city. The Bicentennial of the Coalition had gone off to a good start, and as the night approached, it looked to stay that way. Alexander Reid stared outside the window of his office for a few more moments, before returning to his briefing notes. Thing's had been relatively quiet this year. Trade with Mars Corps was continuing at a steady pace, there had only been a couple of major protests against the Coalition, and most importantly the Vox Populi had only blown one thing up this year, and nothing of any significance at that.

He sighed and collected his notes on his datapad. It was time to hold another session of the Security Council, this time on discussing opening further trade with Mars, and expanding the UCNS...to counter Mars.

Reid shook his head and went out the door.

Planet Osea: Capital of the Osean Federation

"It'll be 600 years to the day soon, where the heavens split apart and countless bolts of light rained down upon us. I think this calls for a history lesson..." the voice said as Mathias turned on the computer systems in his Falken aerial fighter.

"A group of small asteroids was found orbiting around our sun, now named the Ulysses cluster. There was over 10,000 fragments whose orbit put them in a collision course with our planet, and we had no possible way to divert or destroy all the asteroids. In response to this oncoming disaster, six stonehenge railgun facilities were built on various points on our planet that would engage the fragments that would hit our planet. Many fragments were destroyed by the air-burst projectiles launched by the stonehenge facility, but majority of them crashed into the planet, spreading mass devastation  on the ground. Thankfully however, our buildings were able to survive due to the structure we use. It is not a factor of defense or construction strength, it was the fact that at the time we did not need complex structures, so we used light fibers. If this happened now, we would of been in for a world of trouble. Anyways, the Ulysses accident is now known as "The Fall", where in addition your space ship miraculously survived the stonehenge bombardment and crash-landed on our planet near the equator in Sector B9K. Everyone was in a cryo-stasis chamber, but you were the only survivor. 2 years ago, you were awakened and drafted into our defense forces, as required by all citizens. Whether you say after your required term is up to you."

An alarm interrupted the conversation, with a red spinning circle that surrounded the word "Sortie" that appeared on Mathias's HUD.

"Ah, I see it's time to get going. We'll continue this later." The voice said.

-The Moon of Xeios, Sea of Souls, Military Research Facility-

Xeios (Moon of Ice) was one of two moons orbiting Visei, the other being named Xeius (Moon of Magma), and was the larger of the two moons. It was inhabited by millions of Vis colonists, who created a lunar colony on the icy moon which thrived due to the presence of sufficient resources and geothermal energy sources. The Vis did not need the colony to have a 'breathable' atmosphere, as they did not 'breath' nor did they consume the animals and plants which grew on Visei and on neighbouring worlds, but the energy requirements were still massive; such that for most of Xeios' colonisation it was unable to provide its own colonists with energy to sate their needs.

Xeius, a volcanic moon, was deemed uninhabitable by Vis long ago due to its extremely dangerous volcanic and geological activity. But provides the Vis of Xeios with geothermal energy from power arrays on the volcanic moon alongside resources from mining it's mineral-rich surface. Xeios and Xeius both formed an essential part of the fledging Vis Dominion, with Xeios serving as a base for the Vis Military used to test new military equipment.

In the Sea of Souls, one of the larger Xeiosian 'seas', one such base existed. It was a large complex, glowing with energy shields that kept it safe from asteroid impacts which were a constant hazard on Xeios. Currently, a new piece of military equipment was being tested inside a hanger bay; a large humanoid (or rather, Visoid) machine that towered over its creators at six meters tall.

"Prototype Mechanized Warrior-010 'Xivilai', ready for deployment." Spoke a female Vis voice from the machine, lines of light running across it as it stood up and detached the thick energy-supplying wires which connected to every part of its frame

Several Vis Savants moved away from the machine, waiting with breathless anticipation as the hanger bay doors slowly opened up to reveal the mock battlefield which had been readied to test it. One of the Savants, the head of the project, smiled as he beheld the sight before him, "Xivilai, a folktale monster which drained the souls of all warriors that stared into its eyes." He thought, shaking his head, "I wish we could've gone with something a little less dramatic..."

The mech pilot moved forward through the doors, observing the urban battlefield before her. The Mechanized Warriors were designed to be used in urban situations, where tanks and infantry fighting vehicles were less effective, so the battle was in her favour from the very beginning. Through her experimental mech's sensors, she was able to make out the heat outlines of several such vehicles lying in wait behind buildings; but her frame's heat signature would be even more pronounced than theirs, due to the energy requirements of the Xivilai, so she would probably be just as easily identified.

"It's show time." She thought with a grin, pushing forward on the yokes
"You accept darkness, yet choose to live in the light. So why is it that you loathe us who teeter on the edge of nothing? We, who were turned away by both light and dark - never given a choice?"

Year: 2602; 2 weeks after impact

The spores had settled in the crater, little green mushrooms of various sizes had sprouted up everywhere, taking in the plentiful resources. The mushrooms were green, though some differed, but the green ones seemed to perform photosynthesis like plants, while also still being decomposers. It was like its own little biosphere, little strange toothy bipedal creatures ran about the fungal field.

The strangest thing though was there were several greenish pods, like egg sacs, budding on the ground a few of them were large and seemed to have something inside them. The pulsed and then broke open birthing little green humanoids. they seemed  to stand little over 2 feet tall and had large noses and beady eyes.

The little things congregated scratching their rears, spores falling off as they scratched, they looked at each other with dumb faces, they seemed barely sentient.  Before they could flinch, one of them was plucked of the ground chomped on and swallowed by one of the other fungal creatures. The dumb little greenskins ran, finding cover under a large mushroom, until the creature lost interest and ran off.

They looked at each other and scratched their heads, as they headed back out into the fugal forest.

A few days later

A little shanty town made of tiny little stick shack and mushroom houses had sprouted up, the little dumb creature had little mushroom farms and even had pens with various types of the bipedal creatures, some seemed far less aggressive, but there were some pens with the mean ones, in fact one unfortunate little green skin was chomped in half leaning over the stick fence to toss in food, another little snot simply replaced him.

In the mushroom farm though, there was another sac like fungus, this one was far bigger than the others, and it had begun to twitch.

Unknown system. First day, of year one, of the exodus.

A system with two blue twin stars, circling the other’s gravity field in a seemingly endless struggle, an infinitely slow dance across the cosmos. Rare passing rocks aside, there have only ever been ,since ages past,  these two stars, and the multitude of planetoids caught in their orbit. Undisturbed and untouched it is just another system, just another light in the vastness of space. Empty and serene. Until now.

At first it’s subtle, unnoticable and unfathomable, but slowly it grows and rise. A shift in the fabric of space as it folds and twist in on itself. For an instant there is nothing but the shifting space but soon it is swiftly followed by a second light, for a second almost as bright as the stars, shining clearly and strongly. It lasts for several moments, and then vanish as quickly as it appeared. In its place appear a large object; thrown wildly into the orbit of the stars and leaving a trail of glittering dust and glowing sparkles behind it; that quickly fade.

The ship is the Tona’ai, the last hope of the people the built her. Her first voyage has saved the souls she carry but now, when the jump core has burned out, she fall crippled into the orbit of the twin suns.

At the heart heart of the ship, sitting in the command chair and clutching her head, Tona screamed as an endless stream of information surged into her brain, threatening to burn it out.

-- Alert: energy reserves depleted. Auxiliary power engaged.
-- Alert: Radiation levels rising. Unable to divert power to shielding.
-- Alert: Jump core critical. Containment failure imminent.
-- Alert: Sensor array offline. Rebooting.

The alert messages just kept coming, flashing through Tona’s mind at painfully rapid pace. it would get worse once the sensors got online, but Tona knew she had to be able to see, to know where the ship was. It was all there, implanted into the back of her head, procedures of how to deal with these situations the ship warned her of.

Her cerebral implants helped with coordination, sending orders throughout the gigantic network of drones and computer nodes that made up her entire life now, commands transmitted wirelessly and almost instantly. The jump core had to be discharged first of all, before it overloaded, and then sensors and power restored.

Pushing past the pain Tona managed to focus, and set to work issuing the necessary commands; Tona’ai needed to be operational, her own health came second.
“The lesson is this - the game is rigged. The cards are stacked. The dice are loaded. And that’s why we don’t play their fragging game. We don’t swallow their drek sandwich and politely ask for another. It’s why we run the shadows…”

-Visei, Monastery City of Zephi, five days after the Birth Anniversary Celebration-

The Monastery City of Zephi was a major city of the Vis Dominion, a very old and beautiful golden city steeped in tradition from ancient Aedir times; one of the few cities which was not utterly annihilated by the invaders. It rested on a tall granite plateau, which both offered protection from enemies in ancient times and served as a traditional climbing trial which many Vis still relish to challenge.

It served, and still serves, as an ancient bastion for the Warrior Savants (a type of Warrior Monk); martial artists who spend their entire lifetimes perfecting their art and teaching it to others. The Warrior Savants are, by tradition, bound to 1001 styles of martial art; within which lie many sub-styles and disciplines. These styles are divided into bare-handed and weapon martial arts, which are taught to the city's one million inhabitants and spread across the Vis Dominion; as martial arts are held in very high esteem in Vis society, being taught to almost every single Vis upon the completion of their gestation.

The Monastery held a special place in the Vis Dominion, as a semi-independent entity that was primarily ruled over by the Seikuken; the Thousand Master. The current Seikuken, Xilyon, was a 170-year old male Master of many different martial arts; among the greatest martial artists in Vis history who came from a long line of Warrior Savants. Yet, despite the moniker 'thousand master'; he was at most the master of a hundred Vis martial arts, having long since combined them into a form he found most fitting. It was, obviously, impossible for any one Vis to master every single type of martial art; the title of Seikuken was a traditional exaggeration.

Said exaggeration was currently taking a walk in his courtyard, surrounded by guards with long halberd-like weapons which deceptively disguised the particle beam weapons hidden within. It was delightfully ironic that while the Seikuken had previously required no guards due to being able to defend himself from attempts on his life, snipers and gun-wielding assassins were an entirely different matter (as one previous Seikuken had unfortunately found out). He spared a glance at the thousands of young Vis men training under the tutelage of one of his disciples far off in the distance, and smiled, "Sescion is doing well for himself; I wish that he'd learn to teach smaller classes, though."

Vis Warrior Savants parted as he walked by, bowing before him in respect as his station demanded. He had no doubt that many of them held dreams of someday defeating him and attaining the title of Seikuken, a dream that he would have to one day shatter; he had been Seikuken for almost over fifty years now, and of the thousands that had challenged him not one had come close to defeating him.

"Well, one has; multiple times unfortunately as tradition dictates..." Xilyon thought with a sigh, as he looked towards the statue of a large emerald crystal which stood in the courtyard, "The Master of the One Style, the Collective Unconsciousness of all Warrior Savants."

"The Xiphial." The Seikuken spoke aloud, brushing his hand against the ancient glyphs inscribed upon the statue, "Our next match will be in two years time..."

"I look forward to it."

The Mechanized Warriors were designed to be used in urban situations, where tanks and armored fighting vehicles were less effective, so the battle was in her favour from the very beginning.

-Ten minutes later-

The crew of an Ascaion-Class Main Battle Tank waited anxiously as they searched the area for heat signatures, to no avail. It was odd, as the war game had already started; yet there wasn't a single enemy in sight. The Ascaion was a marvel of Vis military engineering, with a mass driver as it's main cannon alongside a particle beam HMG on it's top. The angular tank was designed to not only reflect conventional ballistics, but also to partially refract particle beam weapons so as to minimise their effects on their thick metal-ceramic armor plating.

The Vis tank commander, Vaihlar, looked at his screen from inside the vehicle, monitoring the status of the other vehicles through blips on the screen; all green, with no reports of engagement yet. Sighing, the commander was about to return his attention to the tank's sights; before one of the blips suddenly turned red, not a single word coming over the comms.

His eyes widening, the tank commander ordered his crew to turn towards the direction of the lost AFV. Through their heat sensors, they could make out a high thermal signature which was the shape of a humanoid; it's signature blurring as it dashed through the battlefield faster than their imperfect sensors could track.

-Nearby-

A grin came across the Xivilai pilot's face as she landed near the 'destroyed' AFV from above, smashing her stun tonfa against it and 'disabling' the vehicle's electronics as she came down from atop a nearby small building. The other vehicles, surprised by her sudden entrance, opened fire; sending a hail of practice beams and rounds towards her. But the pilot simply sped to the right, using the small wheels on her Mechanized Warrior's feet to speed away as she manoeuvred her frame; twisting and weaving as she got closer and closer to the 'enemy' vehicles.

One of the AFVs, an Xatton-Class Armored Fighting Vehicle, opened fire with it's dorsally mounted particle beam autocannon; sending bolts of practice beams towards the Xivilai which impacted against its shielding, automatically dimming it to a calculated amount. But this was part of the pilot's plan; sacrificing some damage for a close strike on the AFV as she unholstered a rifle-like weapon and attached it to her arm, blasting the AFV in it's side and disabling it immediately as the AFV's computers registered a 'catastrophic kill' from the prototype particle beam cannon (it didn't actually work yet; this was simply a theoretical damage output).

A weak blast from a Veiss-Class Light Tank's smaller particle beam cannon nearly missed the mech, shooting past its head as the practice round embedded itself in the building behind it. One again, the pilot smirked; dashing towards the Veiss in a zig-zag fashion before twirling around to avoid another shot and blasting it once in it's front to disable it's sensory equipment before jumping atop of it and bringing down it's stun tonfa to disable it.

Another Xatton came up from behind a building, but was quickly ambushed by the Xivilai which used its superior manoeuvrability to skirt around it before blasting it in the rear. Unfortunately, this left it open to a blast by a nearby Veiss; which weakened its shielding considerably before the Xivilai scored a firepower kill by taking out its main cannon and achieved a mobility kill through shooting it's anti-gravity mechanism.

Suddenly, a roaring blast impacted against the Xivilai's shielding; taking out its relatively weak shielding instantly by merely skimming across its surface. Turning around, the pilot came face to face with an Ascaion MBT; which was readying it's main cannon for another shot while firing upon the Xivilai with it's HMG.

"excrement, an Ascaion!" The pilot exclaimed, dashing towards the side to avoid the HMG which by itself could damage her mech's relatively thin armor, "No vulnerable anti-grav mechanisms to take out, the tracks are armored, and the particle beam cannon takes a minimum of seven seconds to charge and reload." She spoke, trying to remember the Ascaion's strengths

The tank fired once more, the particle beam barely missing the Xivilai by a few meters thanks to its speed. If this battle was at a longer range, she knew that the Ascaion would've 'destroyed' her mech three times over by now. Slowly closing the distance while sustaining damage to her Mechanized Warrior, the pilot soon came within adequate range; unleashing two blasts from her particle beam cannon which only managed to damage the formidable tank's armor.

"Tch." The pilot uttered, speeding away to avoid a retaliatory blast from the cannon, "Armor is too thick and angular; I can't kill it with my loadout using normal tactics..." She thought, her mech slowing down, bending down, and planting its arm on the ground; kicking up lunar dust as she used the arm as a pivot to swerve back towards the tank, "It's not as mobile as me, it's main turret turns too slowly to keep up with me at these ranges, and it can't..."

Her thoughts trailed off as an idea came to mind, a wide grin spreading across her face as she sped directly towards the tank; not even attempting to zig zag as she took the brunt of the HMG shots to her frame. Soon, her frame was reporting lost functionality in her left arm; and one of the head sensors took a direct hit. The particle beam cannon was soon brought to bear, it's cannon charging up with energy before a massive thunder-like blast roared out of it; expelling a beam of charged particles at relativistic speeds.

"It can't aim downwards!" The pilot thought, her mind racing as she pulled down on the frame's yokes; hard

Just before the shell fired, the Xivilali turned over and jumped forward; taking massive stress to it's legs which broke down from the strain as it flew through the air from its momentum, the practice shell passing mere meters above the mech and severely shaking it, and smashed into the tank. The tank's operators watched in shock as the Xivilai smashed its HMG apart with it's head (destroying all the sensitive equipment within it) while grabbing hold of the mass driver turret with its right hand.

"I...win." The pilot spoke with a tired smile between breaths, as her mech exerted all of it's arm's hydraulic power (breaking it in the process) and bend the turret upwards; disabling all the tank's weaponry and putting it out of action

Tank commander Vaihlar sighed as heard the pilot through the comms; every aspect of this battle had been in her favour. From the battlefield, to the weapons, to even the inexperienced crews piloting the vehicles. The combat scenario was designed to aid her Mechanized Warrior as much as possible, and even then; his tank was still fully mobile, while her mech was near-completely totaled.

Still, Vaihlar was an honourable warrior; and he definitely wasn't a sore loser.

"Good game, Miss Aeira." Vaihlar spoke through the comms, shutting of his tank's engines, "That was an excellent display of tactical aptitude and combat prowess."

The tank commander waited for a few moments, before a reply finally came.

"Well thank you, Sir Vaihlar." Came Aeira's reply with a breathless laugh, obviously exhausted from the extreme physical demands of the Xivilai, "I'm glad you enjoyed my performance."

Planet Ishanoth - 2277 A.L. (After Landfall)

Planet Ishanoth was mainly a desert planet, though its "deserts" were of a large variety. From the more commonly known sand desert, through rocky deserts with high rising rocky plateus, to extensive salt flats. Even the sand itself came in numerous varieties, some of them with quite psychodelic colors due to whatever chemicals were present along with the silica.

Atop one of the highest mountain ranges present on the planet, sat the city of Aldaiak, a sprawling complex of spires, towers and all sorts of buildings, most, if not all, painted white in a way that the city shone under the sun. The vast majority of spires ended in domes of a deep azure color. Aldaiak was also the seat of the central government for the Taurgit Collective, with two of the most impressive buildings being the Imperial Seat and the Clan Assembly.

The assembly was now in session to decide the first steps to be taken to estabilish a more permanent presence beyond the skies. There was manned spaceflight, yes. And automated scientific sensor emplacements, but no permanent colonies or large stations in space. The emperor was presiding the session.

"Members of the assembly. We are finally back among the stars, but our presence in space is still weak. We need to expand it in a timely fashion. To that end we will be lanching initiatives in the near future to strengthen our position in space. I urge you and your clans to give this goal your undivided attention."

-Visei, City of Zairas-

Zairas was, without a doubt, the largest city in the Vis Dominion; consisting of multiple layers of city grids built atop of each other created in order to utilise maximum efficiency in all aspects of daily life, it was both awe inspiring and majestic to all who witnessed it. Lines of energy ran across the streets, lighting them up at night in beautiful patterns that were visible from orbit; while enormously tall silver monolithic spires rose from the earth, beautiful in both design and utility as they served as living quarters and major business hubs for the Vis. It was, without a doubt, one of the most magnificent cities in the entire galaxy.

Yet, for all it's splendour, it was overshadowed by the flying city of Aura which always flew above them no matter how tall their buildings rose; the personification of the dominance of the ruling order and the Xiphial in that those on ground could never hope to reach them with their structures. The Vis of Zairas, however, accepted their subordination; the Xiphial was the representation of all their desires, and his will was believed to simply be an extension of their own wills. They, someday, could also hope to reach Aura through their efforts; working as a member of the bureaucratic-yet-efficient system which oversaw and maintained the entire Dominion.

The citizens of Zairas were content, happy with their places in society and working hard on a daily basis to make ends meet. They worked, they enjoyed, they prayed, they played, they learned, they built, they destroyed, they invented, they lived, and -eventually- they died. It was a standard of living that few could complain about, as was the current status quo, but as with any society; it had its problems.

Energy demand was one; despite several (relatively) low-tech fusion energy facilities existing in the outskirts of the city, the sheer energy required by both the city and its residents was quickly approaching a point of non-sustainability. Another problem was the dwindling resource supply; the Vis Dominion as a whole was not fully utilising the complete resources of its solar system, and needed fresh worlds to colonise in order to maximise productivity. Aura was a drain on both of these resources, due to the two cities' close proximity to each other, which exacerbated the problems even further.

The current Magistrate of Zairas was Magistrate Aevis, a tall and slender Vis who wore silver robes that adorned his entire body that had golden lines running across it; culminating in a hood with a golden brim. He overlooked his city from the Magistratis, the Palace of the Magistrate, in the middle of the city; a large golden structure that was thousands of years old, from the time of the Aedir. Aevis, currently, was feasting from his daily ration of energy; pure electrical energy harnessed from Visei's superbolt lightning, the finest and most exquisite form of energy available only to Vis of great wealth or social standard given that only about one in a million lightning strikes are superbolts.

He grabbed the energy battery, draining the electricity through his palm with relish as if consuming a fine wine. Sources of electrical energy was generally determined to be of little consequence to other races in terms of usability, but the Vis were able to detect small variations in the types of electricity which formed something similar to taste in their minds; purer sources such as lightning produced finer tasting energy, while current fusion sources created bland-tasting yet nutritious energy.

He sat at his desk, looking over the city's rising energy demands for day with concern on a holographic display, before a holographic icon which displayed the words 'secretary' began beeping in front of him. With a resigned tap of his slender fingers on his holographic keyboard, the icon turned green.

"Good day, sir. I have forwarded the relevant messages from today's People's Voice referendum, alongside messages from energy officials and contractors for the next habitat spire." A voice coming from the icon spoke, "On schedule today: A meeting with educational advisors from several prominent schools across the continent on measures to encourage student creativity in our city, a discussion with energy officials regarding the construction of another fusion plant, and a night trip to Aura for a meeting with their officials regarding resource sharing."

"Cut that last bit out," Aevis interjected, his voice sounding strained, "Our last meeting wasn't even a week ago; we agreed to hold bi-monthly meetings, but I can't just drop all of my work here in the city on their whims at any time."

"They will be angry, sir;" The secretary replied, "this will be the second time you've rejected a meeting call."

"They can live without their Light Fountains for a week; it's their own fault for exhausting so much energy in the Birth Anniversary Celebration." Aevis spoke, before taking another drain of his superbolt lightning container, "Replace the meeting with a tour of the habitat spire construction site, I want to see the worker conditions and if they've truly offered replacement land for those displaced by the construction."

"Very well sir, erm..." The secretary replied, hesitating a bit before adding, "will that be all?"

Aevis sighed with a smile, "No, Xalia; that will not be all." He replied, waiting for a few moments. They both knew where this was going, as was the usual in their relationship, but he enjoyed keeping his new wife in suspense sometimes.

"I expect you in my chambers by midnight."
"You accept darkness, yet choose to live in the light. So why is it that you loathe us who teeter on the edge of nothing? We, who were turned away by both light and dark - never given a choice?"

- Ibir'uri Valley, Province of Ekshetra, Qart Hadasht-

The silence was unnerving. Ibir'uri was an enormous oasis surrounded by mountains in the vast stone desert that was the Ekshetra province. It should be sprawling with the sounds of life, and it had just a few hours ago. But now all was silent. The silence had spread into the fortress which stood proudly upon a steep hill in the centre of the valley. A man walked out onto a balcony which overlooked the lush, leafy forest which surrounded the fortress. In the distance, a few kilometres away, he saw the great mountains which surrounded the valley. He knew that the Ishkar's troops would arrive any day now. He prayed to God it was not this day.

Unbeknownst to everyone within the fortress, they were being watched by eyes all around them. Even if you looked closely, you would not be able to see the dozen scouts moving slowly through the undergrowth on the surrounding hills. "They've established themselves quite the little community."said one scout as he looked through his binoculars at the fortress. He lowered them and took a look at his partner, sitting right next to him with a rifle in his hand, keeping watch for any heretic sentry that might approach. "Anything?"he asked him. His partner looked at him briefly and shook his head. The man shrugged his shoulders and looked through his binoculars once again.

The scout activated the comm link in his helmet, linking it to command. "Command, target has been confirmed. We have at least thirty guards patrolling the perimeter and a hundred more walking about. They have women with them as well."he said. He then saw something in the corner of the binoculars. He looked to see what it was, and saw a woman looking out at the surrounding trees with worry on her face. In her arms she held a child wrapped in some kind of cloth. "Command, we have confirmed children at the site."he said.

"Roger that. If God wishes them to survive, they will. Mark the site for artillery."

"Yes, Command."said the scout, and activated the marking laser on his binoculars. A beep was heard and the scout stopped scanning. Soon, the air whistled loudly as shells cleaved the air, before impacting with the fort the next moment, filling the area with a cacophony of explosions, panicked screams, dust and stone being thrown in all directions, and more whistling as more shells fell.

The shelling continued for a solid ten minutes, blasting big craters in the ground and tearing anything in its way to shreds, be it wood, stone or flesh and bone. But the fortress was strong; it would hold out, and those who made it inside were safe. Meanwhile, on the other side of the mountains, outside the valley, in the mountain shade, stood six hundred men along with their troops transports as well as six light tanks. They had separated from the main force in order to neutralize the threat in this fortress. But for the moment, while the artillery cannons far away were doing their work, something far more important than these heretics were being taken care of.

"In the name of The Messenger, may your minds not wander and may your faith not falter."said the priest as he stood in front of the hundreds of men, whom were all on their knees, their hands tied in their laps, their heads bent down and their eyes closed. "In the name of The Holy City, may your sins be cleansed."the priest continued, the strong, dry wind caught in his light green and white robe. "And in the name of The Lord, may He protect you against harm and guide your arm truly, and if not, may He deliver you safely to paradise. Such is the word of God."he finished, and the soldiers all stood up. An end to the daily prayer for the soldiers, the daily sermon for the priest, and with the warrior's blessing added at the end to protect them in the battle that was to come.

At the fortress, the people who had managed to get inside sat in the central chamber, the women grouping up tightly in fear with a few holding their screaming children, while the men took whatever defensive positions they could. Suddenly, everything around them silenced. Some thought at first they had gone deaf from the constant explosions just above them. But no, it truly was silent. No explosions, no shaking. The shelling had stopped. After what seemed like hours, but was in reality minutes, of ear-deafening silence, one of the men finally rose from his place and started walking towards the door that went to the hallways which eventually led outside. He climbed up the piles of debris, dirt and the occasional corpse, and got on the top of the walls and looked out over the now devastated area around the fortress. Then his eyes were locked at something approaching. He squinted his eyes, trying to make out what it was. Once he saw, he froze in his place, his eyes shot open, and his breath stuck in his throat.

Speeding towards the fortress, over the grass and and dirt, six lightly armoured tanks broke through the many trees of the forest, as they were thin and frail. These tanks were not equipped to damage the fortress further. They wanted it in repairable condition, and would thus try to cause as little damage as possible to the actual building.

As the tanks closed in, they suddenly parted in two groups of three, each going around each side of the fortress, and started to circle it repeatedly, the two groups going in opposite directions. They opened fire, their double barrels roaring furiously as they unleashed their payload. These were not explosive grenades, but heavy, armour-piercing shells. The shells penetrated the thick metal structure of the fortress before exploding on the other side of the metal walls, unleashing hails of metal pellets, making the shells act as enormous shotgun shells fired through the walls. The main chamber was not spared the onslaught, and the women and remaining men screamed out as they either took cover or were ripped to shreds by the red-hot pellets filling the room. The tanks did not stop. Their automatic cannons continued firing their shells at the fortress, as did the bloodbath the shells were creating within the walls.

The heretics within soon started showing up once again, as enough were still alive to still offer some resistance. The defenders started loading up armour-piercing rifles and rocket launchers, but it proved extremely difficult to hit the tanks circling the fortress, as they were close, but not close enough to accurately aim at them as moving targets. The shots that did hit either simply bounced off the armour or did not do enough damage to disable or destroy the tank. Only one of the tanks were taken out, which was hit by a grenade on the bands on one side, which made the whole thing tip over and do several flips due to its momentum, ruining it entirely and killing the crew inside.

The tanks soon pulled back, and was within minutes replaced with troop transports that came thundering towards what was left of the fortress. By there was not much of a resistance left, and the few heretics that were missed by the tanks were quickly taken out by the one hundred soldiers that stormed out of their transports and into the fort. A squad came to the main chamber, and saw that it had been devastated, with debris and corpses lying everywhere in pools of blood and gore.

"No! Please! Don't shoot!"the soldiers in the chamber raised their rifles as they heard a female voice cry out. They saw a woman, badly hurt and bleeding, crawling out from underneath a badly damaged table, holding a crying child in her arm. "I have a child!"the woman pleaded, her tone revealing both her desperation and her weakness from blood loss. One of the soldiers simply aimed his rifle and shot a single bullet through the woman's head, and she fell backwards to the floor, still holding the child.

"We're done here."said the leader of the squad. "Move out. Secure the child."he ordered. One of the soldiers walked towards the dead woman and picked up the child, which was wrapped in the typical cloth used for doing this. He turned the child around, as it had its face downwards, still crying. He moved a piece of cloth to the side and saw to his disgust that the child's face was twisted. It had a strange outgrowth on its forehead, and one eye was placed higher up on its face than the other. The soldier looked away with a disgusted 'ugh' and looked at the leader of the squad. "What is it?"asked the leader.

"It's deformed."the soldier responded, showing some of his teeth to further point out his disgust through his open Itsen helmet.

"A beast-child."grunted the squad leader. "Only scum like heretics would nurture such an abomination. Throw it away. We're done here."he said, and turned around with the rest of the squad and marched out of the chamber. The soldier holding the child gave it one last look, before turning towards his fellow squad members and began walking, tossing the crying child to the side, and it silenced abruptly as it landed head-first on the hard floor.

Keep calm and move along.

>>AWACS COMMUNICATION<<
"Ulysses remnants entering Osean Atomsphere, prepare to engage, pilots"
>>END AWACS<<

"Alright Mathias, show us what you've got! Protect civilian sector B7R!" The squadron commander ordered. The FALKENs broke off and began to engage the flaming meteorites that entered the skies above. Missiles and machine gun fire filled the sky as the flaming rocks broke apart from impact.

"This is Stone-Henge-01 to OAF units engaging the meteorites, prepare for burst fire."

A hologram of the network appeared on the HUD of the FALKENS

>>FALKEN UPLINK CAPTURE<<

>>END CAPTURE<<

"Be prepared to avoid burst munitions, leave the clustered targets to us" Stonehenge's officer finished before cutting off communications. The planes kept flying and maneuvering through the air until alarms rang out. They quickly left their positions at full speed as they watched something fly past them at intense speeds. Behind them the air shook as huge explosions took place in mid-air, decimating the meteorites in the air.

"Holy excrement! That's a MAB-HE(Multiple Air Burst - High Explosive) Round! Never seen one of those fired before! That must be from a Stonehenge Array!" A pilot said, weaving through fragments while blasting them with machine gun fire. Meanwhile, Mathias kept up with his job, preventing any possible impact from the meteorites.

"Good job Bellalux men, and you too Mathias. Let's clean this up and go home." Headquarters radioed.

-Xeios, City of Asayis-

The moon of Xeios held many large and stunning cities, but none were quite so developed as the city of Asayis. The city was a bustling trade city which served as an economic hub for the moon's plentiful resources, shipping them off into space through the city's orbital elevator and back to Visei. The elevator was only made possible due to Xeios' low gravity, and as such there were no such structures on Visei; which mainly relied on mass drivers and spaceships for resource trade.

The city was, to put it simply, extremely utilitarian; large habitat blocks were spread in even patterns, capable of being moved to a different location in a single day via transport shuttles should there be a need for it thereby ensuring that the city was constantly changing. The blocks were coloured differently, depending on their use, and so were easily identifiable. Vis moved through the streets inside anti-gravity transport pods, which automatically ferried them to their destination extremely quickly using a wide 3-dimensional movement plane in order to avoid collisions or traffic. It was for these simple advantages that many Vis chose to live on Xeios rather than Visei.

One such Vis, a traveller coming in through shuttle, was however quite visibly not impressed; being used to the magnificent structures which were common on his home planet of Visei. He wore arctic fatigues, similar in pattern to the native Xeiosian terrain, and was loaded up with many other similar travellers in the shuttle. They were all recruits to the Vis military; having chosen their path after fifteen years of crystal gestation in which they absorbed their genetic knowledge, and after five years of Educational Assignment on Visei in which they figured out what knowledge they had chosen to absorb as a crystal and what path they would take in life.

"Hard to believe that this was the life I 'chose', sometimes." Aurion thought, sighing as he looked out at the lifeless moon though one of the shuttle's windows, "A life of fighting and dying for the sake of the Dominion, a life which I'll be expected to enjoy for the next 176 years. Just one more year until graduation; then I'll be a soldier of the Fire Legions for the rest of my life..."

Up ahead in the distance rose Xain Fire Legion Institute, where he would be tested on his knowledge gained during gestation and what he learned in both Educational Assignment and Zaer Military Academy for the last nine years. Xain was one of the most prestigious schools in the Dominion; he was lucky to make the cut in Zaer to be sent here instead of finishing his final year there.

Aurion's current 'ambition' was to become a high-ranking officer; as he had passed his trials back on Zaer proving his worth as an officer with flying colours, much to the dismay of many of his other classmates who failed and became simple soldiers. Xain would make him into an officer worthy of the Fire Legions, but he would still be but an infant to the more experienced Fire Legion officers.

"I've gained a name for myself four years ago, proved myself as exceptional last year, and will finally be accepted into society next year. Yet even then, I will still be but a child to my elders; inexperienced and foolhardy in their eyes." Aurion thought, gripping his fist tightly with anger and determination, "I will prove them wrong." He thought, as the shuttle began docking with the Institute

Little did Aurion know what fate had in store for him: Adventures beyond his wildest dreams would soon be upon him; trials of immeasurable difficulty and hardships of untold scales would be thrust upon him, and the fates of many would rest upon his shoulders.

Only time will tell if Aurion shall emerge victorious from these trials, and survive.
"You accept darkness, yet choose to live in the light. So why is it that you loathe us who teeter on the edge of nothing? We, who were turned away by both light and dark - never given a choice?"

KES Dona, patrolling the inner asteroid belt of the Tawe system; 212 years after unification

Captain Tess Rega, 472th in line of the Kaveni throne was siting in the captain's chair on the bridge of her frigate, the KES Dona. While it was a great honor to be given command of this warship, patrolling the asteroid belt was probably the most boring this she has ever done.

Suddenly her personal communication unit buzzed, this immediately caught her attention as only priority messages were send to people while their were on patrol. Ordinary messages only appeared when the ship made connection with the Hoa planetary communication network.
She quickly opened the device and read the short message.

When she was finished her hands were shaking as she reached for the ship's intercom " Set course for Hoa, we are relieved of this patrol." Was all she said.

Multiple crew members on the bridge were now looking at her curiously but they nevertheless obeyed her order, Tess quickly send a copy of the priority message to her second in command through the ships internal network before she retreated  into her private quarters.

When the door finally closed behind her she let her tears flow freely. Her twin brother, Dess Rega had been killed.

Hoa; eight hours later

The judge looked into the eyes of the suspect before he asked the most important question of the court case. The murderer looked back in defiance, he already knew there was no point in denying it.

"Did you kill Colonel Dess Rega?" The judge asked.

"Yes, but I did it be-" The murderer started explaining himself but the judge cut him of.

"You are hereby found guilty of the following charges: Murder of a high ranking military officer and an murder of a person in line of succession of the Emperor. You will be tortured to death on the imperial square of Yama."

The murderer started begging for mercy but all he got was the armored fist on one of the guards in his face before he was dragged out of the room.

A small smile of approval could be seen on Tess's face as she walked out of the courtroom, while she still had her brothers cremation ceremony to attend to she was happy that justice was served. The murderer would be technically alive but in severe pain for at least a week, the executioners of Yama were well known for their skill in keeping the criminals alive as long as possible.

Nevertheless Tess wished that her brother was still alive, she never wanted to become 471th in line for the throne by taking her brothers place.

-In orbit above Visei-

The Aurevis Ascedium, which roughly translated to 'The Light of the Vis: Ascended', was a large orbital station created officially for the purpose of civilian transport and habitation. It's main purpose and most distinctive feature, however, was religious; as it served as one of twenty one Sanctuaries of the Aurevis Religion. This was why the station was so magnificently constructed; shaped like a shining metal crystal which floated through the darkness of space, as one of the most expensive projects in Vis history having been created twenty years ago.

It was not intended to be looked at as a holy location, as such terms did not exist to the Vis; the station was simply one of many Aurevis Sanctuaries designed to express the beauty and majesty of the universe, which was in this instance created to symbolise the beauty of space. Vis with the money to do so attempted to visit the beautiful station for prayer at regular intervals of a decade or so, while most Vis could only hope to visit the station once in their lifetime.

The inside of the structure was nothing but pure silver metal and crystal, with many elaborately designed viewports and painted glass windows that looked to the outside of space to emphasise the beauty of the stars, the sun, the moons, and the planets. Hymns filled the air regularly, sung by choirs of Vis who sang in different parts of the station in sync; their beautiful echoes prevalent throughout the crystal lattice-like hallways. Yet there was nothing religious about the songs they sung; they spoke praises to their god and poetic verses, but there was no element of prayer to their music. It simply existed for the enjoyment and awe of the Vis who prayed, to enhance their religious experience.

A man, dressed in elaborate silver robes with a transparent crystal-like material covering his hands, brought a group of Vis to one of the painted windows; which displayed artistic cosmic imagery designed to enhance the beauty of the stars. As Aur, the bright orange star of the system, began rising from the edges of Visei; many of the Vis in the room fell to their knees, awed and made speechless by the magnificent sight before them.

"The sight you see before you is one of many that our ancestors saw; no more incredible or rare than the occurrences of your daily life, but made so much more beautiful due to the innumerable forces at work which conspired together to make it happen." The man spoke, his tone level and sincere, "It was from sights like these, and from the knowledge of the world we have achieved through science, that they realised that this world is so much more than we believe it to be."

Several of the Vis, young men and women who had simply passed by the station out of necessity, listened attentively; though their faith was already unshakable, having been instilled in them from their birth, it aided them to listen to his words and see the sights of the Aurevis Sanctuaries.

"It was then that they came to a collective realization that there is a God in this universe; a God who creates and destroys, who listens and fulfils, who created miracles and disasters, and guides souls through their paths of life." The man spoke, his tone now more grandiose, "And so we strive to please Him; to create a perfect society built upon our ideas of what He should want."

"We, however, do not know Him."

Several of the Vis looked up at the man, startled by the frankness of his words; however true they may have been. The Vis had no prophets; no holy men who spoke to their lord nor any men that attempted to asset themselves as holy. Such concepts, that such a mighty being would attempt to convince the Vis people through one of their own of what was already utterly obvious, were completely alien to the Vis.

"Nor do we attempt to discern His will; for we do not know it, and simply follow our paths the best we can. We create laws, systems of fairness and righteousness, but we cannot truly be conceited enough to assume ourselves as chosen by Him." He spoke, "We thank Him for his mercy and kindness, for both what we perceive as majestic and what we perceive as mundane, and by doing so we pay thanks to his creation of the universe; through the Aurevis, we remind ourselves of the magnitude of what he has given us."

He then looked out towards the stars, spreading his arms wide as he spoke loudly, "And one day, the universe shall yield to this realisation, to our reason and endeavours towards righteousness; and become part of us! Part of what shall someday soon become perfection! Aurevis Ultimas!"

"Aurevis Supernus!" The crowd shouted back, momentarily drowning out the chorus of music with their vigorous cries
"You accept darkness, yet choose to live in the light. So why is it that you loathe us who teeter on the edge of nothing? We, who were turned away by both light and dark - never given a choice?"

When it seemingly had come time for the large fungal sac to burst, a process that had taken a few more days, newer now sapient green creatures had taken up residence in the little village, that was now more wooden structures. These larger creatures had big pointy noses and stood much taller than the lame little ones that could barely think for themselves.

Due to their larger size and intelligence, these larger ones naturally dominated the smaller ones and rules over then, making them slaves. The small green sapients though were too busy in their on little world, with their fledgeling society and their new innovations such as new ways to farm and language to notice that their society was about to change once again.

In the Mushroom fields more sacs had formed, though not as developed as the large one that was about to burst a fact that eluded the smaller denizens of the village. However the time for change had come.

The sac burst open with a guttural roar, as a six foot tall muscled green mass  jumped out of the sac and landed on the ground with a thud. The green hairless ape like creature was all corded muscle and thick green skin. Its jaw was broad an toothed with tusk like lower Canines. Its red irised eyes squinted in the light of this new world it had been birthed on, it coughed up a ball of mucus and wiped its mouth as it examined its surroundings.

It saw one of the little dumb creatures tending to the mushrooms. It stomped over to it and picked it up, the creature screaming in fright at this unforeseen foe, and the large green creature bit the little snots head off, and then chewed on the rest of its body, consuming the unfortunate creature, it plucked up some of the mushrooms as well to complete the meal. Satisfied it headed into the tiny village.

The others upon seeing the large green ape began to panic while the smaller slaves only stared dumbly for a while before mimicing their masters in panic. What could possibly be called warriors were sent to fight the larger beast, but they only met a grisly end as they were far weaker and had less martial prowess than the large one.

After the creature rampaged for a while, it eventually roared and silenced the others. The smaller ones eventually dropping their weapons. Its eyes gleamed with a keen intelligence as it looked at the cowering whelps.

Something was forming in his newly born intelligence, an intelligence already aware of the language the lesser ones spoke, he coughed and sputtered, and then he Spoke.

"Durzgahd!" He thumped his chest,"DURZGAHD!" He bellowed. The intelligent small ones knew that it was the name he had chosen.

"Durzgahd!" They murmured back, and then repeated it more loudly, the First was here, the leader had come.

>>>Federal State of El Salvador, New Central American Federation, Earth

>>>Task Force San Salvador, approx. 21 km outside San Salvador

>>>2702 A.D.

Counter-insurgency operation was the official term for it, thought Captain Brodsgaard, but he knew what this really was.

Retribution.

The Vox Populi Insurgency had been going on for years now, from before Brodsgaard was even born. What had started as a global protest movement, starting in South America over the perceived injustices of the Coalition's hegemony over the planet, had become a global insurgency and guerilla war. At first the Coalition ignored it, as the Vox Populi had been relegated to attacking targets in non-Coalition nations, leaving the various national security forces to deal with them alone. But as more and more of the Vox Populi radicalized and became more militant, their influence spread to other nations, and the spread of terrorist attacks grew. Eventually the Coalition was forced to intervene, when the Vox Populi successfully launched a dirty bomb attack in Portland, Maine, right in the US Eastern Seaboard.

The Coalition responded quickly, and ruthlessly. In a matter of weeks after the Portland attack, the Coalition had convinced the affected nations to allow friendly invasions, jointly by the Coalition Rapid Reaction Forces and member-state militaries. In conjunction with local security forces, the Coalition launched a campaign to stamp out the Vox Populi threat permanently.

But the Coalition had underestimated the Vox Populi, and the war had been going on ever since.

And now Brodsgaard found himself in the middle of it, having transferred from the 8th Scandinavian (Mechanized) Brigade, to Task Force San Salvador.

He ducked as a mortar round struck near him, then continued pushing forward as an IFV laid down a barrage of cannon fire on the mortar position. After weeks of attacks on the TF San Salvador garrison, they had finally located the local Vox hideout that had been causing so much damage. What they hadn't figured was that it would be full blown shanty village, with families among the insurgents. The shanty town had also proved however to be well-defended, and the Vox had been putting up a good fight.

But Brodsgaard knew the village would not last long. He could see fires in the village, and many of the structures in the nearest proximity had been shelled to oblivion. The amount of firepower being poured in was overkill, and it was all because the war had radicalized and hardened both sides. TF San Salvador had suffered numerous casualties to this group, and now it was getting payback.

"All units, drone strike inbound. Be advised, drones are carrying white phosphorous. Fire in the hole, repeat, fire in the hole. Over an out."

Brodsgaard was horrified.

"White phosphorous!?" he said "But there are women and children in there! We can't hit the village with white phosphorous!"

An Australian Captain, most of TF San Salvador were Australians and Americans, said "Consider this an eye for an eye, for torching the last patrol last week back in San Sal. Nevermind the toddlers that got caught in it too."

Overhead they heard the drone missiles come in from above, and right on top of the village, detonate their lethal payload. The entire village lit up, and from in the village Brodsgaard heard the screaming in earnest. He stood there, helpless as the village burned before him. For a couple of hours they let the village burn, before being ordered in to secure it and finish off any survivors. Their helmets fully sealed, to prevent them from inhaling the WP fumes and smoke.

Metro: Last Light OST - Redemption

The village continued to burn, and all around Brodsgaard lay the burned and melted corpses of an entire village. Single shots rang out here and there...mercy killings, but Brodsgaard also saw some of the soldiers just simply watch the people burn. Some people still lived, though most couldn't scream anymore, their lungs ruined by the fumes. Brodsgaard looked down on the ground...and saw what appeared to be a small log, until he realized it was what was left of an infant. It's presumable mother was nearby, burned stiff, her hand frozen in the act of reaching for her child.

Brodsgaard began to retch, struggling not heave out his entire stomach contents.

The Australian Captain looked at him and said "Ah, you're new here. Don't worry, you'll get used to it. Trust me, these gently-carressers have done worse."

Brodsgaard could not speak. It was all he could to simply breathe. This was not the war he transferred over to fight.

Not like this.

>>ALERT! ALERT! INCOMING NEW METEORS! YOU ARE IN CALCULATED TRAJECTORY!<<

This message appeared on the HUD of Mathias's craft. However, it was too late. A meteor strikes his left wing and alarms blare throughout the craft.

"Mathias! Your left wing is down! You're losing altitude!" A squad-mate radios.

###DEEP WITHIN OSEA###

"Come on...activate WING uplink. I know you want to. Your partner is about to die...to crash into the ground and burn to ashes! Reveal your power to me! Save your chosen partner! Save the existence that you saved long ago that is about to die again!" A man said, running his hand across a glass tank. Inside the tank was a humanoid suspended in liquid. Several pipes and wires connected to it also floated in the liquid, which wrapped around the crossed arms whose hands laid upon its chest. The liquid began to glow slightly and lines of energy formed on the being.

"That's right, show me what you can do!"

###IN THE SKIES ABOVE###

Mathias's plane kept falling until something happened. His vision became filled with particles of light, and on his hands a symbol appeared: " α". He did not know what was happening, but his wing regenerated, or at the least was re-formed by light particles beyond the power of what any Bellalux could do. Even then, he is human, not Bellalux, which is what mystified all watchers.

"What in the hell? Who cares! Mathias, pull up and land safely, we'll sweep up the rest of the meteors!"

Intake Station 5, High Orbit, Mars

The Martian Intake Stations were like giant orbital tourist centers, or so the pilot told Aresh Patel as they docked. Patel had previously been a low paid engineer, working on a massive Indus River dam project when Mars Corp contacted him. They offered him a considerable sum to design and build water pumps to supply a new factory city being built. The money would ensure he lived comfortably for life.

His Intake Group were all the same, engineers and scientists from the huge third world development projects going on on Earth, all lured to Mars by massive salaries and promises of getting to work with the most up to date technology and people in the industry.

As the group left the shuttle they were filed into a massive theater room. As they took their seats a movie began to play.

"Welcome to Mars, and to your new life at Mars Corp."

The scene was a productive factory, with various shots of factory workers and managers working together, propaganda, but not as corny as it could be.

"Here at Mars Corp we believe in strong work ethic, strong sense of community and a belief that anyone can rise to any position. We're dedicated to producing our products to the highest standard, and you'll be working with industry professionals with years of experience."

The video dragged on for a bit, explaining the structure of Mars Corp, and showing more happy workers, however near the end the tone of the video began to change.

"At Mars Corp we want you not to think that you're joining a company, but changing your way of life. You're giving up your old life as a Terran and becoming something else, a Martian Human. Mars is stable, prosperous and well protected, we have a powerful military and are on the cutting edge of technology. You'll be safe and free to secure your financial future free form terrorism or crime or government intervention here on the Red Planet."
...scum.

-Visei, Town of Areskiel-

A female figure sat down on a sidewalk in the small town of Areskiel, cloaked in a dirty brown robe that betrayed her poor status. The Vis was almost translucent, her appearance fluctuated as the crystal which sustained her struggled to provide her the power needed to sustain her physical form. It had been two weeks since she'd last sufficiently powered herself, sustaining herself on scraps of energy from what little pity the Vis in Areskiel had spared her.

She had once been a clerk working at a department store, easily covering the costs of her habitation quarters and energy needs, but once the department store became more automated she was deemed worthless and cast out. Certainly, they did provide her with compensation in the beginning, but she had not managed to find any other job in the town due to her lack of job skills and the increasing automation, and by the time she realised that she would need to leave Areskiel to find work it was far too late; she did not have enough Energy Credits to pay for the trip, and her malnourished form could not make it all the way to another city anyway.

Her 'Two Weeks of Trial', a standard by which Vis society deemed Vis who had been reduced to begging in the streets as 'worthless and beyond saving', were already over. She hadn't a single Credit to her name, and would not live for much longer. The Vis Dominion had abandoned her, willingly cast her away as unneeded in their endeavours towards a perfect society. She was nothing but a burden to society now, and there was but one fate for burdens in Vis society.

Her body began flickering rapidly and her vision began getting blurry, as her crystal went into a state of emergency from lack of energy to power her bio-technological functions. The Vis walking past her noticed her predicament, but since they already knew that she had been begging here for at least two weeks; they did not even spare her a glance of pity. The Vis woman looked as her hands, which were fading rapidly, and began crying tears of light (a side effect of both the disintegration and her despair) as she lamented her fate; cursing herself for her weakness and the indifference of society as she laid dying on the sidewalk.

After a few minutes, there was nothing left; only the brown cloak and shards of disintegrated crystal. Her loss was marked by a single tick on the 'deceased' status indicators in the Dominion's database, the reason of death being explained by a single self-explanatory word; a word not a single Vis on Visei would question the meaning of.

'Worthlessness.'

A warm, gentle breeze entered the valley of Cor, making the trees sway and softly murmur as it moved through the foliage and past the thick branches. The murmur spread outward, up int he sky and down to the grass on the slope below; making the ground glimmer as light get reflected off the silvery leaves of a grouping of Mai'vann --- Glamour-leaf; the plants once believed to carry magical power in old Lai'neer myth. Magical or not it still held cultural significance to the people, a sign of peace and healing and growth ,and this valley was one of the few where it it would grow. The wind carried onwards, causing more leaves and grass to sway as it went along, and encounter on the ground a single being, a girl, who lay there; caught in the modest threads of her dress and ruffling the stark red strands of her hair.

Neira didn't mind, she found the breeze soothing, calming and pleasant. She simply lay there, on her back on a comfortably soft bed of grass among the glamour-leaf, and staring at the pale blue sky above and the yellow horizon where the sun was slowly setting. The soft singing of a nearby bird completed the picture of serenity; a far cry from the hectic chaos of the lab where Neira now spent most of her time. Her work was important, or so the researchers had claimed, and this was how she spent the only free time she had. Away from it all. But now the day was nearing its end and the guards would come looking for her if she stayed too long, to bring her back to the dorms where all the other children slept.

She sighed softly. It was time to go back now.

Slowly getting to her feet, Neira take one last wistful look at the valley, another sigh escaping her, and then turn to move back up the path she and entered it by. Her bare feet tread softly along the path, the grass sparing her from any sharp rocks or roots. Something was different now though, she noticed while making her way back, the silvery sheen on the ground was gone and in an instance replaced by a crimson red. She turned her head upwards to see, and what she saw made her eyes go wide in fear. The lab, the valley, even the very sky was burning. Faster and faster the flames moved and consuming all in their path. Neira turned to run back down the hill, dashing as swiftly as her legs could carry her down towards the heart of the valley. But she's not fast enough.

Above her head she see others of her people, flying on the leathery wings of her kin, but she knew she couldn't do the same; Hers hadn't grown yet, and now she was too slow to escape the crimson doom. She must have wings to escape. The flames caught her, an intense burning sensation that lasted only a moment.

She must have wings to live...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unknown system. Day two, year one, of the exodus

Tona wake up with a start, a scream, and sit straight up among the soft pillows that made up her throne-like bed, surrounded by the blank steel chamber that now made up her home. The dream, the nightmare, still clung to her vision and she stared out into the darkness in terror and hugging her own legs to her chest in a desperate attempt to calm herself. A mental command through her implants and a soft light flicked on int he ceiling, banishing the imposing darkness for now. It helped a little, and the young girl wrapped herself with her blanket and climbed out of the bed.

Her instincts drew her down a short passage on the right side of the command room, to another chamber that was much larger and lit by the endlessly flickering lights of the huge database there; its singular purpose to house the lives of the Lai'neer. Neira walked softly among them, her hand stroking the surface of the computer as she did and then finally stopping by one set of machinery. The id-tags told her she had come to the right one. Her family was here. Not in flesh, but entombed like everyone else. They couldn't give her comfort now, but yet she sat down infront of the databank and rested her head against its softly humming surface.

"Adjuctant..." She mumbles and at once her voice is answered by the synthetic, resounding tone of the ship coordination computer. "Yes, Tona?" The machine asks even though there was no real need to use verbal communication between them. "I'm frightened. And sad. Sing me a song, please..." Tona orders and the computer beeps once before a soft melody start to play through the speakers. It wasn't her mother's voice, but it would have to do.

Tona blocked out everything but the soothing melody of the song. She knew that there were things to do, but for now she just wanted to stay where she was.

>>>Luna-Mars Patrol Route

>>>Joint CRRF/Mars Corps Security Force anti-piracy exercise

>>>2702 A.D.

It was nearing the end of the naval exercise. Captain Dalton stood in the USS Houston's CinC, observing the battlegroup's simulated hunt for one of the Kuiper Belt's pirate enclaves. With the battlegroup was the USS Houston, EUS Minotaur and the EUS Jupiter, as well as ships from the Mars Corps Security Force. Though there was certainly mistrust between Mars and Earth, both sides agreed that they shared a common interest in removing the pirates, and often cooperated in joint ventures towards that end. The annual anti-piracy exercises were just one such venture.

They were just about to move in for the kill, when the Houston's navigation officer frowned, saying "Sir, you better come take a look at this".

Captain Dalton moved up to him and said "What is it Lieutenant?"

The Lieutenant pointed, saying "EUS Minotaur and one of the Mars Corps ships have changed course. Comms can't get a hold of Minotaur for some reason, but they've got a signal to the Martian ship, though it's getting patchy."

Dalton turned to the comms officer "Put me through"
I'm back people...

-Xeios, City of Asayis, Xain Fire Legion Insitute-

It was Asayis' night cycle now, when the light of Aur could barely reach the city and the moon was shrouded in everlasting twilight. The original colonists landed on the city during this period of time many years ago, giving it the name 'Eternal Twilight'. It was a haunting, yet beautiful sight.

Aurion sat on the lunar rocks, watching the sun as it balanced on the edge of the horizon as he sat motionless. Today was the first day of his officer evaluation training, and what a day it was...

-Earlier-

Hundreds of Vis, dressed in military dress uniform, stood before a large stage inside the Institute. The hall was decorated with magnificent statues and paintings, depicting famous Vis military battles of the past. One statue showed a Vis taking a stance, thrusting his arm forward into an alien figure's chest as the enemy lay kneeling in defeat. Another painting showed a Vis kneeling on the ground, his expression contorted with rage as he laid down a figure shrouded in red onto the ground. Both works of art depicted the Kaeos: The Onslaught. The invasion of Visei by alien invaders of unknown origin, barely fought back by the Vis at a very heavy cost; the loss of their creators, the Aedir, to a powerful alien biological weapon.

A single Vis came up to the stage, draped in jewel-embedded golden armor with beautiful glyphs and sigils expertly hammered onto its surface. It was a ceremonial armor, dating back to the founder of the Institute; the former Grand Commander and founder of the Fire Legion, Xain. The men and women stood to attention and saluted him as he stood up to the podium, surveying all of the Vis before him before he spoke into the voice-amplifier.

"Saris Vhahren, future Warriors of the Fire Legion." The man spoke, his powerful tones reverberating throughout the hall, "I am Grand Commander Xahravantis, the master of the Fire Legion and all it surveys. You students are the best of the best, selected to join our academy for your aptitude, discipline, and sheer combat skill which represent the apex of our military's tactical ability. You will be our Swords, dealing death to any who oppose us and bringing them under the light of the Vis; and by the end of this year, you will be ready to face the horrors of war with vigour in your steps and courage in your hearts."

"It was the Fire Legions who ended the Razus Rebellion, the Fire Legions who pacified the Asileim Insurrection, and the Fire Legions who put an end to the Skaven Pirates! We are the bravest Warriors of the Vis Dominion, the most intelligent and fierce soldiers that the Dominion can set upon its foes!" Xahravantis shouted, bashing his right fist against the podium, "When an enemy threatens us, truly intends harm towards us, we will utterly eviscerate him until not even a memory remains of his transgression! When an ignorant race dares to bar our cleansing revelations from washing over them, then we will eliminate their fiendish restrictions along with their lives and corrupt society!"

"You are not yet Warriors of the Fire Legions. You have learned well over the years, and displayed admirable qualities befitting of a Warrior, but you are not yet ready to join our ranks." The Grand Commander spoke, "Throughout your time at Xain we will test your skill, push you to your very limits and beyond, so that we can see if you are truly worthy of the mantle of a commanding officer in the Fire Legions. This year will not be lesson, but a trial for each and every one of you."

Xahravantis raised an arm and gripped it tightly, displaying his golden gauntlets, "Those that pass this trial shall become Warriors without compare! Indomitable soldiers that shall never surrender! Sharpened swords that shall never break! You will be leaders of our future wars, bringers of light and fire to any who oppose us! And so I say to you all, to every single man and woman in this hallowed hall...!"

There was an pause, as the Grand Commander winded down; a small smile coming across his formerly stern expression.

"Good luck." He stated simply, to the confusion of the prospective Warriors and the knowing amusement of some of the instructors, "because you're going to need it."
"You accept darkness, yet choose to live in the light. So why is it that you loathe us who teeter on the edge of nothing? We, who were turned away by both light and dark - never given a choice?"

Tona sat by herself in her room, cuddled up under the blankets of her bed with her eyes closed and listening to the soft music playing around her; a kind, gentle tone more akin to a lullaby than anything else. It helped her concentrate, to guide her focus as she sorted through and examined the constant stream of sensory data, both internal and external, that entered her mind through the cerebral implants now that the arrays were back online. Error reports were as common as anything else, power fluctuations and damage to the primary, secondary and tertiary fusion reactors among others. Thankfully the solar power was still operational or the Tona'ai would be dead, floating around with no warning or no means to maneuver.

Tona had sorted those problems by now, setting the Ferh'tona to work in repairing the reactors and getting all systems back online; patching up integrity damage, though limited as it thankfully was, and setting hundreds of tiny probes on sealing the damaged reactors. By her command the onboard factories had also spun to life to produce additional squads of drones for workpower, small probes intended to scout and mine the rocks of the nearby asteroid field for H3 fuel, water and any other materials that may be needed to repair the ship entirely.

With the practical issues sorted Tona went back to her restful half-sleep, letting her adjutant take care of the details of research and repairs, and her mind travelled to review the sensory data from outside the ship. Two suns and a gigantic field of asteroids caught in their orbits was the first thing the sensors had picked up, and later larger objects that seemed like they might be planets. No obvious signs of life though, at least not yet,  so she'd have to send scout probes to find out later.

“The lesson is this - the game is rigged. The cards are stacked. The dice are loaded. And that’s why we don’t play their fragging game. We don’t swallow their drek sandwich and politely ask for another. It’s why we run the shadows…”
