It's actually really easy once you know what to do. ;)

Yeah but first I need the hardware. :P

I have this laptop which is okay but I can't make changes to it...
I estimate another year until I can have a decent PC.
Then I might be able to mod ME3 once learning from ME2...

If I make it that long to get a PC.

Yeah, PC building is fairly expensive.  I was lucky to have enough money when I built mine because now that I'm in college I barely have any at all. =/

Yeah I'm not about to go into Uni...I am going to see a lot of my christmas and birthday money going to it.
I am saving now though... I'm guessing I'll need a good £1000 for anything decent that'll last me for a while...plus I gotta find someone to build it...no way am I doing it myself...not wasting my money breaking stuff.

Building a PC is like building a LEGO set, only easier. ;)  1000GBP will build you not only a decent computer, but a very good one. :D

Yeah...I don't think so. :P
I have very little trust on me building a computer as I know of a graphics card a harddrive and a usb stick.
That's it...that's all I know.
No way am I building anything with no knowledge.
I don't have the tools to build one anyway...

Phillips head screwdriver should be all you need. And the only thing that can really go wrong besides dropping a component or something is static discharge, and that's easy to prevent.

So no solder wire/iron needed?

Then how does it connect electrically?
How does stuff stay on?

Heh, no soldering. Everything fits into... sockets I guess you'd call them. When people say it's as easy as LEGO they're not being funny, it literally is.

Might want to ask further questions in the hardware section by the way.

Okay...weird...
I don't see building a computer can be as easy as LEGO with -1000 knowledge on them.
I'm not going to openly ask as anything involving me making anything is purely theory right now so asking would be pretty useless.

here is how I explained it in the chat.

You take your case, then screw in the Motherboard to it.

Take the Battery and put it in the Circle Slot. It will click in place once its in (which requires little effort)
Take the Power Supply and Screw it into the Labled area in the Case (the fan slot)
Plug the Power Supply into the motherboards left over slot

Take the CPU and put it in the square slot. It will Click in (little effort)
Take the Ram and slide it into the only slot that it fits in. Easy to Figure out.
Take the Graphics Card and Place it into the only spot it fits into. Easy to figure out
Put the sound card (if it isnt built in) and plug it in under the Graphics

Plug in the Hard Drive and screw it into the slot along the front (or leave it hanging in the case)
Plug in the DVD Drive and Screw it into the Case

Turn on your new computer and install Windows 7

The hardest part is making sure that the parts are all compatible when you're buying them. :P

That it is.  I am due to do a tear down and a full system clean.  If you want I can document the progress on the rebuild.  But there are literally countless articles on the web that show you how to build a computer.

Uh...okay I wasn't actually asking for this when this was first split...I have at least months before I can even consider thinking about it...thanks for all the stuff said but it is seriously going over my head and not needed right now. :P

If it's not too much trouble I'd like it temporarily closed as this is going to give people the impression I am asking....which I'm not.

Articles are useless on me as I can't read things over the internet which have been pre-written as the information won't go in.
I literally need someone right beside me holding my hand showing me what to do.
You know, like a child would when you're teaching them to tie their shoes...

Still good general info and a good place for anyone else with questions to ask them.

Hi I'm new to the forums and have a few questions on building my first gaming PC.
1.) RAM Placement: Where is the optimal place to put them in (2x2Gb).
2.) Once the rig is manually put together (which I feel fairly confident doing) do I install windows 7 first. What if the driver doesn't work, what then?
3.) slave and master switches on components: how do I know which to put it on?
4.) Will I have problems having everything communicating properly?
5.) How do I know how to configure the HDD, video card, CPU, etc. for optimal performance?
6.) How do I get drivers without internet once I install windows 7?

Sorry but that was just my brain spewing out random questions. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. A link to a comprehensive PC build walk through would also be helpful (I have fail googleing skills).

First off welcome to the board!  Always glad to have new faces!

now to your questions:

1) Every motherboard is different, dual/tri-channel positions are best if I remember and the motherboard manual should tell you which ones you want.  (Sweffy would you confirm my belief on this?)

2) Win 7 should have basic drivers for all but the craziest of components, which you shouldn't be getting into unless you've done this a few times.  So long as you've just got standard components it won't be an issue, after win 7 install go grab proper drivers for your motherboard, videocard, sound card.

3) These days this isn't much of a thing.  If you are running SATA drives there is no master/slave.  If you end up with IDE drives bug us and we can guide you on them but going SATA is the better option.

4) You shouldn't, it's pretty foolproof these days.

5) For your first system, plug them in, install drivers, don't mess with overclocking yet.

6) All the things that require drivers should come with them on CDs to install.  It's best to get the latest ones from the internet but those CDs are better than nothing.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Doctor that makes me feel so much more comfortable going into this. If it is not too much trouble would you be able to check over my parts list. Captain Jean-Luc made the list with the exception of the tower, OS, Optical Drive, and CPU heat sink. I would like to be able to run ME2, BFBC2, and most modern games on highest w/ at least 60 FPS. I also want to be able to run DVDs, game discs, and be able to burn cds, so that is why I have two drives on the list because I wasn't sure if a burner could read also. I also wasn't sure if I should buy the heat sink on the bottom of the list to replace the stock fan.

I would recommend this DVD burner instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151233&cm_re=samsung_dvd_burner-_-27-151-233-_-Product

For ram I personally prefer g-skill but corsair is good.

On the CPU that's a black edition which is generally for overclocking/etc which I'm personally not a fan of so you -might- be able to save a little cash by getting a regular drive but that is a maybe and it won't be a lot if you can.

The OS I recommend getting professional, don't bother with ultimate though.

I'm not familiar with that case but for the most part a case is a case so nothing to really say there.

the rest looks pretty good, if Cap'n signs off on it then I'd say you're good to go, may want to have sweffy take a look at it too but you're looking good to me.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231275 g skill RAM. I'm just asking if this is compatible because of the (PC3 10666) stuff. What does this mean? do I need to worry about it?
How important is professional 7 over home premium? I am asking because I am trying to keep this build under 800 and it is a $40 differnece between the two.

The g-skill looks to be $4 cheaper than the corsair from my eye.  Other than that the only difference I see is that the corsair is 1.65v instead of the gskills 1.5v.  Really they're identical.  The "PC 10666" is just another way of saying "DDR3 1333"  They mean exactly the same thing. :P

I guess really the pro vs home premium probably won't make a difference.  I just prefer professional.  I don't like limits for no reason on my software. :/
