New Rig being built.
« on: September 12, 2011, 02:11:51 AM »
Yeah, it finally hapened. My desktop is on the fritz. It started blue-screening/resetting out of the blue, and on top of that bad blocks started appearing in the HDD. That excrement even corrupted the part of windows that handles aero.

So far, I've bought the video card:
GV-N580UD-15I

And I intend to buy these:
Core i7 2600K Box - stock cooler, don't intend to overclock.
GA-Z68X-UD7-B3
KHX1600C9D3/4G Box - 2 sticks, or perhaps this:
CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B

I think I may be more intending to go towards the Corsair kit.

PSU: TX750 V2

For a chassis I'll either keep this:
CM 690
or switch to this:
HAF X

As for HDDs, I'm already covered (2x 2TB). Same goes for monitor, keyboard, mouse and BluRay burner.

Lemme see what I can remember off the top of my head...
AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE
2 4gb ddr3 sticks, likely 1333, kingston
ATI Radeon HD 4890
now as for the mobo...don't remember the damn model. Will have to look.
1.5tb HDD
BluRay burner
750w modular PSU from an obscure brand, getting old.
the cm 690 chassis

In response to your new rig, I can't really say anything good about Corsair. Had a Corsair PSU that gave out, and numerous Corsair RAM sticks that gave out within a short period of time (no OC). However that may just be my luck as I've also consistently had Western Digital HDD's fail for both myself and my father plus a set of Mushkin RAM sticks that gave out quickly too.

However, I've never had a graphics card give out on me even with OC :sorcerer: and I'm still rockin' my Core 2 Quad

Yup, the HD that gave out under me is a Western Digital one. :P

I chose the PSU based on a review I read in a hardware site I like.

Would go Thermaltake for the PSU, they've been at them longer.

There's the Toughpower XT 775W. And in the same price range as the Corsair one, both with very good reviews.

I wouldn't have a problem with buying this one at all. Very nice.

Hmmmm...only Caviar Black HDDs available in the SATA 6gb "Non-Green" field...

I wish there were more brands available.

Seagate and Samsung's selection was all Green drives...dang. :(

Oh well, already bought the HDDs, and pretty much everything else. Only have to actually start building...:P

Well I put a Caviar Black in my dad's computer (always used Blue myself, never been overly impressed with them) and the drive seemed to do pretty well. If I remember right, you don't live in the States and therefore cannot use Newegg correct?

Indeed. I have to buy parts on the local market.

There, the new rig is built. Only have to mess about with the software some more and it'll be ready for gaming!

I know I am a bit late on this but just for future reference one of the best power supply review sites is jonnyGURU.com.  They really test all of the power supplies they get and do a great job at not only testing the reliability and such but also testing the quality of the power the power supply is spitting out.  You should bookmark or write down this site for future power supply reference.

As far as power supplies go it isn't about who has been in the business the longest but rather it's mostly about the platform the power supply in question is using.  One of the best modern platforms is the current one made by Seasonic.  It's used in a couple of Seasonic units (FYI: not all Seasonic units use the modern Seasonic platform!,) the Corsair AX750 and AX850, and the Antec High Current Pro 750W and 850W.  It may be used in some other power supplies but I do not have that information off the top of my head.

Sorry if I seem kind of pushy but I am very very very anal about power supplies.  Picking a good power supply over a bad one could mean the difference between an alive computer or damaged components down the road.  If you stick to that review site though you should be golden!

Good luck on your new computer!

Maybe that explains my situation... :D
