PbP Guidebook
« on: January 13, 2015, 07:41:38 PM »
Introduction
Welcome to the wonderful world of PbP or Post-by-Post. PbP is online roleplay like Dungeons and Dragons, although instead of being run in person, is ran on a forum through the utilizing the aspect of posting.

To keep PbP Fun for everybody, Game-IV utilizes a method of Membership when it comes to PbP. This allows GMs or Game Masters to be a form of local moderator for their threads within the PbP boards and stops entity's such as Bots or Malicious Users from being able to easily come in and ruin a game. There is no restrictions of membergroups, so players can feel free to join one, or both if they feel like it. Membership is free and opened to all and can be granted/approved by Global Moderators or Administrators so feel free to just apply and play!

Reguardless of MemberGroup, Game-IV will allow anybody the ability to post and create topics within the PBP Discussion or Informal Games boards. This allows regular members to participate or ask questions before they begin playing a game or for potential GMs to gauge interest before going ahead and starting a game

How to Play
To apply as a player of games, simply go to http://game-iv.com/index.php?action=profile;area=groupmembership;u=9 or at the top of the screen select "Profile>> Forum Profile" then on the side bar, select "Group Membership". From there you will be applying to the "PBP Player" membergroup. After this, simply wait for it to be approved, or feel free to PM a Global Moderator or Administrator to get your membership approved ASAP. Once you have been approved, go back to the Group Membership page and set your primary Member Group back to "Registered Members" to allow yourself to continue posting in threads outside of the PbP Games Board

Being part of the PBP Player Membergroup gives you permission to post in topics within the PbP Game board

As a player of a PbP your main rule is to follow the GM and have fun. All games will include a basic rule set within their Discussion page and if you need additional help, the Game Master and other Players will be glad to help.

How to GM
To apply as a player of games, simply go to http://game-iv.com/index.php?action=profile;area=groupmembership;u=9 or at the top of the screen select "Profile>> Forum Profile" then on the side bar, select "Group Membership". From there you will be applying to the "PBP Gamemaster" membergroup.

Being part of the PBP Gamemaster Membergroup gives you permission to create topics, post within those topics and moderate the topics you create within the PbP Game board.

As a GM of a PBP your job will be keeping track of the game for players, dishing out punishment and providing tools to move along the storyline. The general rule of thumb is to create your Discussion Thread utilizing a template first to gauge interest. Once you get enough players to begin playing, then create your Game Thread

PbP Genres
Like all Dungeons and Dragons esque games, there are several ways to play. In PbP a single game by default has multiple genre types.

Scale
Empire Based
Players control an entire civilization, or empire where they control every aspect of said empire. With this type of story, players will create characters as needed which fit within the frameworks within their empires to move the game forward.
Character Based
Players control a single, or small amount off characters which are used to propel the game forward

Story
Linear
A Linear story has a set beginning and a set end... maybe multiple of each. Both beginnings and ends made by the GM who directs the players towards the set goal.
Universe
A Non-Linear story, or Universe Story is all about placing almost zero restrictions on the player. There is a set beginning to the story, but where the players end up is completely up to the players actions. In this type of story everything goes and players are typically in charge of self-policing each other, as such everyone has just as much say as the GM when it comes to arguments... although the GM retains the sole ability to make executive decisions.

Dice Rolling!
Built into the forum we have Dice Roller, an extension which allows us to roll any number of dice and have an output inserted into the forum. While not all games use Dice or Randomized Numbers, for the ones which do, it provides a great convenience. If you aren't sure if a game uses dice as part of a main component, please refer to your games Discussion page OP or ask your GM.

Dice Roller itself allows the generation of n-th random numbers between a range. The extension itself is simple. In the command [roll.]3d13[./roll] I am rolling 3 dice which goes from 1-13. To generate a simple random number, just set the dice number to 1 and pick your upper range. You can also Stylize a Dice Roller roll adding BB-Code wrapping around the outsize of the roll tags. Built into Dice Roller is an Anti-cheat function which will notify at the top of your post if you have edited the post in any way after a dice was generated. Although annoying if it shows up, if you are one to make spelling or grammar error fixes, You can hide the effect of the warning by simply placing your roll within a spoiler tag and it will restrict the warning to only within that spoiler tag. in addition to this, some games may require that Dice or Randomized Numbers be formatted in a specific way, either hidden within a spoiler or a BB-Code applied to the number. For additional information on Dice or Randomized Numbers in respect to your specific game, please refer to your games Discussion page OP or ask your GM.

The Dice Roller extension is quite extensive, allowing everything from including parameters to basic math. Bellow is examples on how to utilize them. Just remove the dots.

Quote from: Advanced Dice Instructions
[roll.]1d6[./roll] - rolls 1 6-sided dice.
Might result in:
Quote

    Rolled 1d6 : 2, total 2

[b.][roll.]1d6[./roll][./b] - rolls 1 6-sided dice.
Might result in:
Quote

    Rolled 1d6 : 2, total 2

[roll.]2d12+5[./roll] - roll 2 12-sided dice and add 5 to the result
Might result in:
Quote

    Rolled 2d12+5 : 6, 11 + 5, total 22

[roll.]2d20^10[./roll] - roll 2 20-sided dice, re-rolling any result necessary so that the dice rolls are greater than 10.
Quote

    Rolled 2d20^10 : 3 8 10 3 17, 2 10 9 10 14, total 31

[roll.]2d20v10[./roll] - roll 2 20-sided dice, re-rolling any result necessary so that the dice rolls are less than 10.
Quote

    Rolled 2d20v10 : 11 3, 3, total 6

[roll.]2d20<10[./roll] - roll 2 20-sided dice, discarding any result where the roll was not less than 10.
Quote

    Rolled 2d20<10 : 4, 20, total 4

[roll.]2d20>10[./roll] - roll 2 20-sided dice, discarding any result where the roll was not greater than 10.
Quote

    Rolled 2d20>10 : 9, 10

Normally it will add the word 'Rolled' in front - you can customise this. For example, a spell that does some serious damage in a game:
[roll.]{Freezing} 1d10 {Fire} 1d20[./roll]
Quote

    Freezing 1d10 : 1, total 1
    Fire 1d20 : 2, total 2

You can also nest the requirements, with the proviso of stating the things as they are in order here.
[roll.]{Uberdamage} 15d100+10^10v90<80>20[./roll] - 15 100-sided dice, adding 10 to the result, rerolling anything 10 or less, rerolling anything 90 or higher, and if after that, you have values 20 or less, or 80 or higher, they get dropped.
Quote

    Uberdamage 15d100+10^10v90<80>20 : 82, 7 61, 3 36, 59, 30, 86, 14, 42, 70, 22, 99 58, 100 73, 46, 93 1 91 42, 12 + 10, total 549

Lastly you can also have an iterator at the end:
[roll.]2d6x3[./roll] - roll 2d6 3 times and display the results overall
Quote

    Rolled 2d6 : 6, 3, total 9
    Rolled 2d6 : 1, 4, total 5
    Rolled 2d6 : 1, 5, total 6

I will be leaving this thread unlocked so that other GMs/Players may add in their own tips/tricks/resources
