Fallout New Vegas
Getting started on modding
THE BASICS!
So yeah, after a short discussion on the IRC I decided that I would post a list of mods that are a must have. First things first for this, FOMM, NVSE (Then, Use this 4GB Version launcher for 64bit systems,) and Archive Invalidation Invalidated. These are three must have tools if your going to do any sort of game modification for Fallout New Vegas. Next: Install process for FOMM, FOSE, and Archive Invalidation Invalidated.
NVSE:
IF YOU INSTALL THE 4GB VERSION YOU MUST LAUNCH FROM THE FNV4GB.EXE DIRECTLY FOMM WILL NOT LAUNCH IT!
* Download and open the .rar archive
* Navigate to your Fallout new Vegas main directory
* Drag and drop all files but the readme from the FOMM:
* Download the .exe and run
* help it find your Fallout New Vegas data folder if it asksArchive Invalidation Invalidated:
Put that excrement in your Data Folder!
Ok, now that those things are done we can move onto the fun part, THE MODS! So This list will be updated as I add to my own game, I'll try to keep just the correctly working compatible ones one here for now. They will be sorted into FOMOD files and standard drag and drop installs as well as sorted by type of file. (Companion, Conversions, Weather, Guns, etc.)
Highly Suggested Mods. (Sorted starting with FOMODS)
(Remember to read the authors specific instructions- README IS YOUR FRIEND!)
(Also at the end of the list I will write out the install order for some specific mods so you don't get conflicts and have your game stab itself in the eye and run around.)
* PROJECT NEVADA -FOMOD Install(CONVERSION AND IMMERSION)
* Willow- A Better Companion -Standard Install(Compainion...Derp NSFWish)
* Mod Management -Standard Install (Utility -HEY THIS IS IMPORTANT MOST OF THE MODS HERE USE THIS FOR CONTROL)
* Advanced Recon Thermal and Night Vision -FOMOD Install (Gameplay change)
* Primary Needs HUD -FOMOD Install (Hud addition)
* Immersive HUD -FOMOD Install (Enables hiding of the HUD)
* Unified HUD -FOMOD Install (This will be important)
* Darnified UI -Complicated Install (Read what he says to do on his post)
* Powered Power Armor -Standard Install (Adds systems and function to Power Armor)
* Ambient Temperature -Standard Install (depending on which mods you choose see further for this)
* HUD Extended -FOMOD Install (HUD overhaul, see advanced install section below)
* Nevada Skies -Standard Install (COMPLETE OVERHAUL FOR WEATHER, DO NOT INSTALL UNLESS YOUR WILLING TO EXPERIMENT. REQUIRES ADVANCED INSTALLING AND A SECONDARY FILE FROM ME.)
* Ghost and Spectre Armor based on SC2 -Standard Install (Armor shown in picture)
* Ghost Armor Project Nevada NV support -Standard Install (BE SURE TO HAVE PROJECT NEVADA AND GHOST ARMOR INSTALLED -LOAD ORDER MUST BE Ghost Variants Adjuntant.esp THEN Ghost Variants PN PATCH)
* EVE Essential Visual Enhancments -Standard Install (This is really cool)
* Underground Hideout -Standard Install (Quite possibly one of the best mods around WARNING STRONG COMPUTER RECCOMMENDED)
* Weapon Mod Expansion -Stand Install (More parts for guns)
* ELECTROCITY -Lighting Overhaul -Standard Install (Pretty much makes New Vegas Strip blindingly awesome along with other places)
* Lings Coiffure -Complicated Install See Instructions (Overhaul for player face and hair)
* Sunglass Collection -Standard Install (Adds a whole gently-carresston of sunglasses to the gas station in Goodsprings)
* Beware of Girl Female Body Replacer -FOMOD Install (VERY NSFW)
* Colossus T49xv Power Armor -Standard Install (Project Nevada and Powered Power Armor Compatible)
* DYNAVISION -Dynamic Lens Effects -Standard Install (This mod adds Depth of field to the game, can help with lag for some)
* CINEMATECH - Movie effects -FOMOD Install (Adds the ability to use filmgrain and such, BE SURE TO HAVE IMAGINATOR INSTALLED)
* THE IMAGINATOR -Visual Effects controller -Standard Install (allows you to change lighting in Fallout New Vegas -WARNING BE SURE TO INSTALL ELECTROCITY TO USE THIS MOD AS WELL AS CINEMATECH!)
* Fallout New Vegas Idle animations -Standard Install (This a fun little mod that adds some basic animations to your character when standing still)
* The Directors Chair -Total Vision Control -Standard Install (Use this for adjustment of all things DynaVision and Electrocity related -MUST HAVE MOD MANAGER INSTALLED!)
* Enhanced Shaders -Complex Install (UPGRADES SHADERS, WILL LAG THE PISS OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER UNLESS YOUR COMPUTER IS GOD! HOWEVER! It makes for some very pretty screenshots. Also doesn't run to great on ATi Cards.)
* Pipboy Readius -PIPBOY REPLACER -Standard Install (This excrement is the best thing since sliced bread, it turns your pipboy into a pda so you don't have that ugly ring of metal around your arm.)
* OJO BUENO Texture Overhaul -FOMOD Install (IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A 64BIT SYSTEM WITH MORE THAN 4GB OF RAM DO NOT USE THIS MOD! -IT WILL DESTROY YOUR GAME EXPERIENCE DUE TO LAG! IN ADDITION THE 4GB NVSE LOADER IS REQUIRED!)
* Charisma Based Follower Limits -Standard Install(An excellent suggestion from mikethor007, adds a charisma based follower system allowing more than 2 companions at once.
* Weapon Mod Menu -Standard Install(Another from mikethor007, allows for removal of mods from weapons and a more complex interface.)This will update as time passes.
Standard Install Process:
Open archive and click and drag appropriate files into data folder. (Ask if you need more detail than that)
FOMOD Install Process:
* MAKE SURE FOMM IS SET TO RUN AS ADMIN
* Open rar file containing FOMOD file and double click
* Dialog box should open asking if you want to make a backup of orginal file Y/N your choice
* Wait for list of FOMOD to generate then activateAlternatively:
* Open FOMM
* Click Package Manager
* Select Add FOMOD
* Rest is self explanatory
Advanced Installs:
HUD Installs:
Order for HUD install (Suggest you do this part before any other mods to avoid anger at the HUD stuff):
* Darnified UI -READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON HIS POST! AND BACK UP THE FILE BEFORE YOU EDIT!
* Project Nevada
* Primary Needs
* iHUD
* HUD Extended
* Powered Power Armor
* Mod Management
* Unified HUD Project (This will sort out all the compatiblity of the huds)
Lings Things:
* Go DL the Original Archive from Fallout 3 here: Archive Open the File (Yes its a FOMOD Archive but you cannot install it that way)
* Copy the BSA, Texture, and Mesh folder and place in DATA folder
* Download and install the ESM from here: ESM File
Nevada Skies Installs:
URWLiefied Version: This one I have certain files that make it work properly. Modified ESP can be found here: Actually Working Sandstorms ESP I also suggest installing this: Cloud Pack Before installing these two however you need to Install the main files: Data Files And then, ALL THE THINGS! Go into the data folder, base data file, then cloudpack, then esp.
Load Order! :cry: (Trust me, this part is the worst)
So, I despise working on load orders, but since there seems to be some who actually care about it, I shall post my current, "90% Working" order!. :sorcerer:

If not well then GO HIDE IN A HOLE OR SOMETHING!
So that about wraps it up for now, post questions, finds, what have you. I'm sure Kikai will get on this at some point as well. :ninja: So have fun, and happy modding.
phonypapercut:
New Vegas specific script extender here. I can't imagine they would bother making it if FOSE worked just as well.

no, that was my derp, grabbed the wrong link, was in a rush to finish it at class. thanks for the catch.
mikethor007:
FOSE, FOMM and the archive thing are must haves indeed.
Of that list, I have Darnified UI (hoooo boy, I love this one), the Nevada skies one(excellent one), Underground Hideout with all the compatibility patches for the DLCs (I store all my excrement there), Weapon Mod Expanded (all my weapons are modded, including uniques).
Companions and extra gear I usually don't download. I tend to go alone, and I really like the gear I got in the DLCs.
I think I'm going to try the Electrocity one though.
I would make recommendations for quest mods, but my favorite one isn't being updated. I wish someone would make a quest mod as good as The Cube one for FO3.
