Sweffy just sent me the list, and I would have to say that, for the $$, this is a pretty dang good rig. If I had been smart (read: spent a bit less on my mobo, perhaps) I would have gotten the 690 II.

Good, build.

I'll sign off on it.

I'm quite jealous.  Nice build.

If I were you...

I'd go with the Phenom II 955. Cheaper and exactly the same except for clock speed, which can easily be changed. Use the extra money to go with the 2GB version of the 6950.

You'll also want an aftermarket CPU cooler. The one that comes with the 955/965 sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

Thou shalt be — Nothing — Thou shalt not be less.

He told me he didn't want to overclock.  Also if you're not planning to unlock to a 6970, the 1gb 6950 actually does better because it has lower latency across the VRAM subsystem due to the lower amount of VRAM.  Also, 1gb is all you really need for 1080p.

At least that was my reasoning...  Not sure Rin is up for a VBIOS  flash... ;)

Fair enough.

Though, I'm not sure how long it will remain true that 1GB is enough for 1080p. The Witcher 2 is already making me wish I had more.

It's not the VRAM.  That game just makes GPUs cry. :P

Setting that to very large turns the game into a slideshow on any 1GB card from what I've heard.

It depends on the screen resolution.  The thing is, that game is iffy on a 6950 anyway...  And all cards better than a 6950 are going to have more VRAM.  It's hard to define causality here.  Maybe if someone has crossfire 1GB 6950s and they were to test it vs 2GB crossfire 6950s then we could see.

But GENERALLY in 1080p you won't need more than 1GB VRAM.  At least until games actually start using DirectX 11...

Here's another good card (with 2GB) and this one is actually cheaper:  http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131393
