Title: Minecraft Server!
Post by: The Doctor on January 02, 2012, 12:12:14 PM
So, there has been a semi "official"... ish... Minecraft server running for a little while.  Whitelisted and in creative mode.  It had a small burst of activity upon setup but has since mostly died with only sporadic activity from some.  When it was set up it was put as a creative mode server because for the most part what all of us did in SMP was spawn blocks and build things.  But that gets boring after a while and while I've tried even I can't keep my spawn area project going.  Good intentions, poor result.

This weekend however a few of us have been playing multiplayer with each other just running the server on our desktops but with a twist...

Thanks to El-Destructo we've been playing with IndustrialCraft BuildCraft RailCraft and RedPower mods all at once.  Any one of these expands what you can do in minecraft immensely.  So far we've only touched the first two in our work but the others have so much potential as well.  I personally have worked seriously only with the IndustrialCraft and even then have only touched some of it.  Buildcraft I've tested some but not seriously.  The other two I haven't touched at all only looked at information for.

To sum them up:

IndustrialCraft gives you hugely enhanced industry (duh).  There are now more furnaces, that are faster and/or run on electricity.  Which can be generated by wind power, solar power, coal, wood, geothermal(lava), or nuclear power plants.  The last of which will explode epicly if not taken care of.  You can also build smart auto miners which (while requiring quite a bit of power and resources to do) will dig down into the earth and extract the useful minerals for you.

BuildCraft gives you pipes, engines and pump systems (maybe some more I haven't used it much).  You can pump out lava and water from areas, power machines to move your resources from the depths of your mining complex back to your base, automatically sort items, pipe them into furnaces to automatically smelt them, then pipe them into a finished materials chest.  You can also build giant strip mining facilities with it.

RailCraft gives you better, you guessed it, rails.  All kinds of things to improve how minecarts and rails systems work.  new cheaper rails (that are slower), expensive faster ones, elevator rails for vertical movement, new detectors for carts, special rails for controlling traffic, crossing rails, all kinds of stuff.

Red Power enhances redstone, I haven't worked with it at all yet but from what I understand it lets you turn redstone into wires you can run, they can be bundled into groups color coded, comes with new detectors and compact inverters and things like that.  Again though, haven't tested it personally yet, just seem the crazy awesome it can do.

All that being said I'm thinking about resetting the server and setting it up with all of this.  Honestly it makes minecraft feel like what minecraft is supposed to be, there are tech trees, it takes time and effort.  A nuke plant is hugely beneficial but also very hard and expensive to install and run, potentially incredibly damaging.  It's not just "oh I have diamond I have the best".  It takes work, effort, even without mobs it's DEADLY if you mess up.  The number of times we've had "Why would you hook up that high voltage line while I'm walking on it?!" moments is... well stupidly high :P

I'm pretty much ready to just go ahead and do it but I figured I would at least run it by the people who (semi) use the server as is first for questions/comments.  So I'll keep an eye on this and I'll try to talk to people who use it as I can.  One note whatever happens the server will remain whitelist only, no random griefers to deal with.

What do people think?

Minor note: Playing around with it a bit the red power seems to only give you new (and very useful) wiring options, the extra detectors seem to belong to buildcraft/railcraft...  Not that it really matters if you're using all of them.

I for one think it is a wonderful idea, we could set up a semi-working city thing, all working together to bring us forward into a new technological age! :D

And then see how it goes from there.
I think it could be good.
Once I am able I'd definitely join up to that. :)

Nuclear reactors are THE way to go for mass power production. Though they require a very careful and proper setup.

Their need to be adequately cooled is paramount. Not only can one use a better cooling rods layout, but one can also submerge the reactor in water to help keep it cool.
I've seen what happens when the reactor overheats. It goes BOOM and makes a HUGE crater.

Redpower is VERY useful. Being able to run vertical wires and only powering on the blocks being touched by the wire instead of all that "power by proximity" thing is awesome.

Though I'll likely just build a basic home/base with truckloads of chests. Building big stuff (alone) takes too long without WorldEdit, even in creative mode.

No more pyramids or tall buildings.

I have played with these mods to the point where i can't played normal minecraft anymore :)
So i would greatly appreciate if i could play on this server as well.

(i could help out too, if you need any help i mean)

Heh, Iv'e never been able to build anything big in Minecraft myself.
Haven't used one of those programs for it either.

30 minutes with these mods was enough for me to say "Never again" to regular minecraft. :P

It seems at this point that general consensus on things is "Yes!  Let us do this!"  Now with how much exploring we've done a world wipe is probably a good idea.  I can provide the world file to anyone who wants to save anything they did build though.  Does anyone have any recommendations for seeds that produce worlds with nifty areas near spawn?

Seeds you say.
lost: Spawn in a mushroom bio and swamp.
Horo: Large pine forest
Game I.V.: Huge pine forest and a huge grassland.  (looks awesome)

I thought I'd expand on this a bit: The other night I was redoing some of my wiring and setting up my energy storage devices again to be less a convoluted clustergently-carress and had got my MFE unit installed in the wrong direction (these are medium voltage) which backfed its output into one of my machines and I didn't notice.

I loaded up the machine with some cobblestone to turn into sand and it nearly blew my face off when it overloaded.

Took out part of my ceiling and wall, too.

That being said I am gonna go and find an island somewhere, all to myself. :D

That way I can do reseeeeeaaarch and not blow up anyone else's stuff.

Quick update, the current creative mode stuff will be staying as it is, just been reduced in available power significantly.  Shouldn't be a problem with the amount of traffic it gets.  A second server has been put up for the new hotness but it isn't ready yet,  I'll be trying to get to work on that today.

On the servers I've made the server needs to have the mod files and the client also needs to have the client version of those mods.
I don't really know if there is another way of doing it, besides maybe using Spoutcraft and Spout. (Bukkit plugins)

This is probably generally true for touching anyone's stuff, doubly so for those who have somehow conned me into giving them op powers and tripple for touching areas right near spawn.  That excrement is mine biotches.

You'll have to download the mods into a client yourself.  I have a .zip file of everything all nice and setup you can PM me for, if you want to work on it yourself AMW should be posting soon (have posted already?) a list of what needs to be installed.

We are considering adding couple of additional mods as well nothing particularly game changing except one that mods the nether.  Since we haven't decided on it yet I have temporarily disabled the nether portals so that any nether generation includes the updates.  For those who want to throw their opinion in the ring it's the nether ores mod that makes the various over world ores spawn in the nether as well.  Could be fun.

Hello all,

Per request of DrTran here is a run down of what mods are on the server and what mods you need on your client to connect.  Also included is a master zip file that contains all the 'soft' mods (ie you don't need to mod your jar file).

The server has the following mods installed and loaded (this includes hard mods)
ModLoaderMP
MCForge
IndustrialCraft2
BuildCraft
RedPower
RailCraft
PowerConverters
Additional Pipes (Buildcraft addon)
Some of the mods *ahem* Additional Pipes had hard to find/broken download links

To even connect you need the above.  But this is simple for you! All you need to do is mod your Minecraft.jar file, follow the instructions here http://wiki.industrial-craft.net/index.php?title=Download#Setup (http://wiki.industrial-craft.net/index.php?title=Download#Setup) for modding your jar file correctly.  The last hard mod you need to do is add the Minecart Compatiability layer into your client.  You can get this from
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17772947/minecraft_mods/hard_mod/Minecart_Compatibility_Layer_Client-4.0.zip (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17772947/minecraft_mods/hard_mod/Minecart_Compatibility_Layer_Client-4.0.zip)

Install as you did the previous hard mods.

After you've modded your jar file, you will want to download this zip pack http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17772947/minecraft_mods/minecraft_mods.zip (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17772947/minecraft_mods/minecraft_mods.zip)  It contains ALL of the required mods to play on the server and some additional ones that are client only (mini-map)

After downloading the master zip file, extract the contents to your .minecraft/mods folder*.  DO NOT EXTRACT THE INDIVIDUAL FILES!!!!  They need to stay in the format they are in or it WILL NOT work.

Any additional questions?  PM me or DrTran for assistance, or better yet get a mic and get on TeamSpeak (teamspeak server details: me2legion.org:9987 ) and ask us directly... (when we are on)

amwdrizz
*If the mods folder is non-existent just create it

You've been whitelisted.  For everyone else, the easiest method is to try to connect once and then let me know what your minecraft name is.  The white list is caps sensitive so that method records it in the logs for me.

The nether ores mod has been added to the list of mods, there shouldn't be any changes to the mod list past this.  You can get it here and I will add it to my mod pack and ask AMW to add it to his asap.

It can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/r9gkd7a45ic4p80/NetherOres_Client_1.1.0.zip (http://www.mediafire.com/file/r9gkd7a45ic4p80/NetherOres_Client_1.1.0.zip)

Also the nether is now activated.

Since my Laptop decided to take a massive dump in my face i was forced to reinstall the OS, Bios, and replace some parts...
So i don't have the 1.0.0 minecraft files anymore so i can't play on the server until i get those again.
