UDK or CE3 SDK?
« on: November 20, 2012, 05:37:11 PM »
Hey, don't know where I would post it, so I put it here.

Anyway, I'm in a bit of confusion. There's two free edition game engines I have to choose from one of them. Unreal Development Kit and CryENGINE 3 SDK. Obviously, both have advantages and disadvantages. Though it'll be my own decision which one should I use, I thought I wanna hear you guys your opinions on which I should use.

It all depends on what you want to do it them, Each one are better for different reasons, the reasons impacting which type of game you're making.

Well, I wanna make an FPS/RPG game in the future with open-ended gameplay (aka emergent) sort of.  :ermm:

But as of now, I wanna start small with either of these two before I go ambitious.

CE3 if you have a powerful computer and if you have the commercial software

Make sure you have the programs for asset creation like 3DS Max/Maya, Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop, notepad++, etc.

UDK for weaker computers and low/no budget, it natively supports GIMP, Blender, etc. You will still need Flash for UI creation.

Hmmmm...for me it would depend on what version of the Unreal Engine we are talking about. If it is the old one used in Mass Effect or if it's the new one Epic has been showing around.

I have the UE3 version of UDK. I believe it will be a while until Epic release UDK for Unreal Engine 4.

By commercial, you mean the license, right?

I'd go for the CE3 then. The UE3 is growing old, too old by now.

Not only the license for using the engine, but the development kit and what other commercial software will be necessary for asset creation, going by the list he posted.

The license for the CE3 is only free for non-commercial use. If you intend to sell the game, you'll have to get the paid license.

Commercial software like 3DS Max, Maya, Mudbox, Zbrush, etc.

You can get Autodesk software for free if you're a student. Or you can just pirate it.

CE3 has a non-commerical free license, an indie license, and a standard business license.

Also, If I remember correctly, UDK is an inferior version of UE3.

CE3 free gives you some C++ source code, while UDK gives you none.

After giving some thought, I think I'll go with CE3 SDK since it looks more appealing after I saw many stuff about it.

Nevertheless, thanks for all the replies.  ;)

EDIT: Okay, you know what? I'll stick with UDK for now. CE3 SDK has been annoying so far.

UDK is gonna give you the same trouble + worse. If you are making a serious game, enjoy light baking. Most serious facilities use multiple computers for it and it still takes them hours and lots of air conditioning.

Right.... and should you give me reasons why should I choose instead or at least make comparisons for the two? Not being grumpy, just want your input.

And as much as I'd like to use CE3 SDK instead, I heard there are problems for people who are trying to reach Crytek for a license. So if in case I wanna sell my game, I have to go through a lot of hassle to get a license from Crytek. Other things like coding (Though it's a bit confusing for people who doesn't have C++ experience), animation, etc, shouldn't be a problem for me.

Crytek is currently not finished with the licensing terms right now. It shouldn't affect you much, because you aren't going to make a fully-working, bug-free game in a day, week, month, and possibly year. When Crytek finishes licensing terms, it will be announced. The most I've heard is 20% goes to them for indie devs.

I've tried using UDK...it's bad.

Okay, thanks for your time, TE. I might give it some thought about this, but for real, thanks.
