Image source: Neowin[/float] So it has finally come, that Windows Media Player will no longer be the most useless player of all time. Microsoft has apparently decided to support higher quality codecs by including MKV support directing into the coming version of Windows. You will need build 9860 or higher of the technical preview to use the playback feature, though it is still a little glitchy.

Also new to Windows: the option to activate two factor authentication! If someone steals your computer and knows your password, your computer is essentially open to anything (though most information is not encrypted anyway). Now Microsoft has added the option to send a passcode to a mobile device or, if your device supports it, fingerprint identification, in addition to a standard hexadecimal or image password.

Enough to make up for Windows 8? Maybe.

[float=left][/float] What if I told you that the Oculus Rift wasn't the only major competitor in gaming VR? Last night, during Sony's GDC panel, Sony formally announced that they were interested in developing Virtual Reality technology to complement the PS4's pure gaming attitude. Entitled "Project Morpheus", the current prototype has a low persistence 1080p display panel with 1000hz motion and full 360 degree rotational and positional tracking. Much of the presentation was spent explaining how technology had to be pioneered for presence, a new buzzword in the business, and further details including price and availability were not given. What was said, however, was that the device would be compatible with the Playstation camera and Playstation Move.

Shortly afterward, not to be outdone, Oculus VR announced a new Developers Kit, creatively entitled DK2, with vastly improved specifications over the original. In the new kit (stop me if this sounds familiar), the display panel has been upgraded to a low persistence 1080p OLED screen with 1000hz motion and positional tracking. Fortunately, there will be no giant blue glowsticks attached to the Oculus device as OculusVR has opted for infrared tracking. The new kit is available for preorder at $350 with first batch units estimated to ship in late July.

User News / Battlefield 4 Mantle Patch Delayed
« on: December 30, 2013, 11:52:54 PM »
[float=left][/float] It appears that AMD has announced the delay (on December 30th, no less) of Mantle support for Battlefield 4, pushing the date to at least January of 2014. Though no specific reason was given, many people suspect it is in part due to the bugginess of the game across platforms and AMD waiting for things to be ironed out completely before devoting resources. Battlefield 4 is still the first game intended to have full support for the Mantle API, but it seems it won't have quite the lead time over other games that was planned.

Quote from: AMD Press Release
"After much consideration, the decision was made to delay the Mantle patch for Battlefield 4. AMD continues to support DICE on the public introduction of Mantle, and we are tremendously excited about the coming release for Battlefield 4! We are now targeting a January release and will have more information to share in the New Year."

Following that topic, DICE recently stopped work on all future projects, including Star Wars Battlefront, to provide full support and apply fixes to Battlefield 4's problems. Seems like EA is allowing DICE to properly finish their work this time. Let's hope that Battlefield 5 turns out a little better?
Any comments?

[float=left][/float] Take a moment to go back to the year 2006. There was no high definition standard for widespread public use established. Toshiba and Microsoft teamed up to introduce the HD-DVD format, while Sony brought forth Blu Ray disks. Skip beyond the embarrassing battle to the present. With the new console comes support for BR disks, but not the 3D output widely expected. Microsoft has made no official comment on the matter, but since a customer support account confirmed the ability would in fact be present, it is possible that it may be part of a future update. Since the inclusion of 3D playback was first seen on Sony's Playstation 3, it is widely expected that the followup will do the same. Opinions? Favorite console? Type below!
CNET Newspage

Followup edit: It appears that Target has made the mistake of shipping out several hundred Xbox One's 2 weeks before launch. Users are confirming features and posting their results online. So far, it seems that the HDMI output of the console is not using HDCP, and is thus compatible with recording devices such as the HD PVR2.

User News / Star Citizen to Support Mantle API
« on: November 07, 2013, 09:36:38 PM »
[float=left][/float] Well, it seems that team green will have some true competition with AMD after all. Cloud Imperium Games has announced that Star Citizen will launch with support for AMD's mantle architecture right from the beginning. Essentially, this means that the team creating the game will be able to access the most basic level of commands on the GPU and streamline the process to reduce processing time. According to AMD, this technique could allow for up to 9 times the amount of draw calls per second that traditional graphics cards currently allow. Need to have all of that detail to see when you're taking out those thrusters, huh?

What is your opinion? Think it won't make a difference? Let me know below. Find the original press release here.

[float=left][/float]
Microsoft has released a full reversal on all of its DRM plans, ranging from online connectivity to used game sales. You will no longer have to be connect once per day, and games won't be locked to your accounts. Seems they had a small change of heart after Amazon announced the PS4 was outselling the xbone 4 to 1.

User Reviews / Crysis (The One That Broke Your Computer)
« on: July 20, 2012, 05:55:27 AM »
[float=left][/float]Forward by Teh Tran:

Today we have for you a review of an oldie(relatively) but goodie.  Crysis, the game that broke a thousand computers.  Or rather a million, I'll stop trying to make old school greek epic phrases and just give you the facts:  It's a review.  It's of the original crysis.  It may be a bit of an old game but I think this review has pointed out well that it's still a relevant contender in the market.

Review after the break

[cutoff]

Let's get things started with the obvious. All scores are out of 10.
[float=right][/float]
GRAPHICS
If you had a computer back in 2007 and you were interested in gaming on it, you probably heard about the game that was kicking everyone's computers in the balls when it was released. If not, you should not have had your head buried in the ground trying to avoid GFWindows Live. Usually the first thing noticed about the game when shown to someone new, even to this day the visual elements to Crysis remain comparatively fantastic. While earlier showings of the game had a few features that were cut, a majority surprisingly made it through to the released game. From the destructible tin-roofed buildings to interacting with forest environments and everything in between them the game was an improvement on its spiritual predecessor, Far Cry, and miles ahead of almost every other game of it's time in virtually every optical way. Built on Crytek's CryEngine 2.0, the game uses (the recently released at the time) DirectX10 to render out beautiful island landscapes and frozen tunnels with many user-changeable parameters. Because the engine's components were easily alterable, user modifications began to appear to streamline graphical improvements while not toasting the computer than ran the game. On the opposite side, once hardware was released that could support even more insane configurations, users began to release improvements to the game that increased texture resolution and other very noticeable differences. (see right) If in 2007, you had taken a game from 2002 and compared graphical ability to any game released that year, you probably would have laughed at the difference. Although one could argue as we come closer to photorealism in games that differences will become less noticeable, it is still an amazing technical feat to have a game still look beautiful by standards half a decade after release (and still fun to play...!)

[float=left][/float]GAMEPLAY
Have you ever wanted to shoot down a tree and have a branch crush an enemy? Maybe throw a barrel at a building and cause the entire thing to explode? How about power throwing a turtle and causing it to bounce off of 3 people? With Crysis, your violent imagination was the possibility. Because of the open layout of the game, enemies were engageable from different angles and tactics. The player's different abilities (cloak, strength, speed, armor, and technology integration), added by a suit of armor in game, allowed for total customization of how situations were approached. If you felt like being a rambo, you could charge in with speed and destroy everything before they knew you were on them. If you felt more sneaky, you could engage a cloak to bypass enemies altogether or flank them from behind. Alternatively, if you just felt like being a boring joe, you could (by choice) remain in armor mode the entire game and pick off enemies from half a mile away. But in the end, the choice was yours and the game made it really feel that way. Speaking of choice, there were also alternate missions to be had in Crysis. While not exactly Mass Effect scale in decision, a few (shown as yellow dots on the minimap) could result in additional information or weapons to help Nomad stop from deflating like a balloon. The weapons themselves were for the most part universally customizable (allowing you to stick a sniper scope on a shotgun, for those that cant seem to stop drooling at times) making it seem as if the pieces used for those purposes were actually in a bag and not just glued onto your gauss rifle. All in all, the game was fun to play and not just something to pass time with. Though if you wanted to play it again....

[float=right][/float]
REPLAYABILITY
This, to me, is where Crysis falls a bit short. Before Picard comes to cut my head off, let me explain why. Although there are a few mission differences built into the game, the overall story remains exactly the same (and it isn't that strong to begin with). Once you kill a Korean or Ceph using every possible method possible, you lose the motivation to continue playing. Treking through jungles, icelands, and beaches can only last for so long before you figure out an easiest path for your playstyle, at which point everything is becomes optional at best. There are also a few problems that are commonly annoying as well. The characters' odd ability to de-synch from what they are saying is more than enough to break immersion once the "wow" factor wears off at the end of the first playthrough, and the final level is so full of particle effects that it is hard to focus on what you are doing.

So, overall, I like crysis as a game. It is in my top 5 games of all time, but I probably won't be coming back to it any time soon. So, final score?

User News / Star Trek Online Going Free2Play
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:59:19 PM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float] Star Trek Online, the latest on the gaming side of the Trek universe, will be unveiling a free2play feature for its game before the year is over. Content will be fairly sizeable as all professionally designed missions and ships will be available to silver members (free). There are of course limitations, such as crew number, custom missions, and forum access. Beam me up.

User News / Crysis (1) Coming to Ps3/Xbox360
« on: September 09, 2011, 06:31:13 PM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float]

Well, Crysis is coming to consoles. It will be released sometime in October through digital marketplaces only for 1600 msn points or the equal in monetary value on psn. The game has been altered to fit the hardware, of course, with a new lighting system and changed suit mechanics (perhaps a clone brush of C2). The explosions are notably different (worse, in my opinion) in the short trailer given to advertise the release, but the vegetation appears to have kept its appearance and interaction, though there is much less of it.

User News / GameStop Tampers with DE:HR Games
« on: August 25, 2011, 04:50:19 AM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float]Did you buy a copy of DE: Human Revolution from GameStop? Turns out your copy has been tampered with. The original game was supposed to come with a pass to activate the game on the OnLive service, but all units sold from GameStop have been opened and the tickets removed. Square Enix and OnLive might be able to make a case for "tortious interference" against GameStop. Seems like someone is in a bit of trouble.
UPDATE
All copies of the game have now been pulled from store shelves.

UPDATE 2
GameStop is now giving out $50 gift cards to people who preordered the game, apologizing for the interference and attempting to earn back consumer trust.

[float=left][attach=1][/float] Well it seems that not even the Mass Effect franchise will escape the grip of EA's multiplayer moneygrabbing stretch. According to the latest cover of XboxWorld360 the game will in fact be featuring multiplayer. More info will come after the full magazine is realeased. Could this be the possible scenario leaked earlier?

User News / Crysis 2 DirectX11 Support Coming
« on: June 25, 2011, 12:59:25 AM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float] At long last, Crysis 2 players on the pc side of things can rejoice! Crytek will be releasing the 1.9 patch on June 27th, containing a "high resolution pack" and game support for directX11. Crytek's CEO calls the improvement a "sneak peak of how PC gaming will evolve in the future." No word on how much the boost will effect performance but if it is anything like the lower settings, the game should still be more optimized than its predecessor and run smoother.

The first MEM raised $14200 for a charity called Child's Play. The sequel to it will be in november, but they have just opened up the donations. With $136 already, they will definitely make their goal. HOWEVER, this time is slightly different. You are able to sponsor a character when you donate (similar to player, but you get it). Let's get out there and show them some charity.
I will match up to $50 from gameIV/tzf :)

User News / Mass Effect 3 dubbed 'Most Promising' Retail Game Of E3
« on: June 20, 2011, 11:11:40 PM »
[float=left][attach=1][/float]Most of you know me as someone hard to impress. This year's E3 managed to get (or keep) me hyped on not one, not two, but three games. I imagine most people here have heard of Mass Effect 3. According to EEDAR (Electronic Entertainment Design and Research), ME3 had the "highest number of recorded page views among all tracked games" during the conference. They estimate the game will sell 20% more copies than Mass Effect 2 based on this data. What does this mean? It got more attention than Battlefield 3 even with all of its advertising and history. I would say that is a fairly impressive feat.

Quote
The top 20 most promising retail releases showcased at E3 2011, according to EEDAR, are as follows:

1. Mass Effect 3 (Electronic Arts)
2. Battlefield 3 (Electronic Arts)
3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda)
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard)
5. Assassin's Creed Revelations (Ubisoft)
6. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Sony Computer Entertainment)
7. Batman: Arkham City (Warner Bros. Interactive)
8. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Nintendo)
9. Halo 4 (Microsoft)
10. Infamous 2 (Sony Computer Entertainment)
11. Duke Nukem Forever (Take-Two)
12. Star Wars: The Old Republic (Electronic Arts)
13. Tomb Raider (Square Enix)
14. Gears of War 3 (Microsoft)
15. Rage (Bethesda)
16. BioShock Infinite (Take-Two)
17. Super Mario 3D (Nintendo)
18. Resistance 3 (Sony Computer Entertainment)
19. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (Microsoft)
20. Street Fighter X Tekken (Capcom)

One last note, I hope developers can take something from this. Games do not NEED multiplayer to sell well. A game can stand alone on singleplayer content, and it can stand tall.
