Companies file patents all the time which never get used, hell Sony sits on this thing

I'd be bashing them along with microsoft if they did that kind of crap. And wouldn't buy their console either.

Though the xbone should not collect any sort of info, but consume it as it is provided by kinect. Use it, and then immediately discard it.
Which is what it does. Its just like today where you have to actually go searching through the settings and jump through a million hoops if you want to set up the data reporting.

My issue with this kinect watching you thing is that even if you can turn it off its still a service no one wanted in the first place, and you know little Timmy's parents will have no idea how to turn the damn thing off.
...scum.

And it is a $100 "service" at that. Quite an artificial way to raise the console's price.

They've already said that it defaults to off, that you have to dig through the settings in order to turn it on, and that they walk through the privacy settings as the first thing that ever happens when you turn the console on for the first time.

Besides, Kinect has alot of functionality that is amazing for games. The new one is much, much more powerful than the old one, and since it comes with the console, developers know they can rely on the person having it so more experiences will be built for it.

That argument doesn't really matter. It's there. That's a problem in itself. And it drove the price of the console up. Had it been optional like with the 360, a lot of people would simply not get it at all and move on.

Yeah, sure. Everyone will want to wave their arms and speak to it.

I tried using it. Did not like it in the least. I felt like a loon waving my arms around like that.

No thanks. I will just use My Controller, and apply a Hammer to the Kinect.

Thats where the new functionality comes in. The Camera is better, and the microphone is better. The Kinect can now Track controllers, determine heartrate, operate in a pitch black environment and be able to filter out even the most noisy of rooms.

Developers can use the heartrate function in it (something everyone drooled over when Nintendo announced the now dead vitality sensor) to enhance horror and shooters. With the higher quality camera, developers can track more subtle things like a quick shake of the body (as used in DR3 to throw off zombies who jump on you instead of having to mash a button) or a persons thumbs. The Kinect can now track the controllers so you can do things with those (or at the OS Level how it will auto sign in to whatever controller you pick up). And the Microphone is not only much more sensitive to sounds, but it does a much better job at filtering out background noise to only hear you, this way your not repeating things over and over again for it to pick up.

They do so much more with the new Kinect. Developers will be able to make Kinect a large part of games because it is part of the standard package and not something only 10 Million people have. Everyone will have one so more things will be crafted with it. Its just going to become something that everyone expects.

Nah, I'll pass. I don't care for the kinect stuff at all.

Nope. If you do that, the Xbox just flat out won't work.

That's another really crappy thing. The Kinect is not in the least-bit damage-resistant. And if it breaks, which it will, you're out another hundred bucks to make your console work.

Obviously the people in Toronto are insane.

Hm. Maybe there's a reason Orphan Black is set there.

Because they already went through it in the 1990s and fixed it by actually cutting spending.  Wish I could say the same for this country.

OT:
Microsoft lost a measurable amount of fan base and even changing everything they are not guaranteed to get that trust back.  Granted I never had any plans to buy the NSAbox even before it was announce and I only might get a PS4 later down the road for the exclusives and to use for a blu-ray player/entertainment center.  Also I could get a Rift and a Razer Hydra.

Yes, but we cut most of the spending from the military budget. At a time when it desperately needed an overhaul, and replacements for aging equipment. And even now, though it's gotten more attention, the CF still really needs new equipment. We've resorted to cannibalizing some of our ships and aircraft to keep the others operational. And I should also add none of our really old submarines really work anymore.

So yeah...don't go envying our amazing budget foresights quite yet.
I'm back people...
